I know Bill Adam can diagnose problems in a player's system by listening to their sound, e.g. upper body tension. What does he prescribe in the way of exercises to eliminate undue tension in the upper body and tongue? I occasionally fall into tensing up as I play in the upper register, or when I try to play louder dynamics in lower registers. I know he addresses student’s problems as unique individual issues, but I imagine there's a common theme to his solutions to these particular barriers. |

Generally, all tensions are released by focusing on a rich and energized flow of breath through the sound and obssessive mental focus on hearing a gorgeous tone in your imagination.
In a lesson (beyond those to things) he will basically refine those tow points by giving you images to pursue; word pictures that describe (metaphorically, not mechanically) how you should approach things and a specific (demonstrated) sound approach to the music (primarily tone, but also articulation dynamics) . The biggest part of how those things are improved is by listening to a model sound and imitating it. It has less to do with what you are practicing than how. |
