I just realized that I had a Blue solo done that I hadn't posted, so it's linked up now...

It's Blue Mitchell's solo on "March on Selma", from the Mitchell recording "Down With It".

Here:

or here:

I'm gearing up for some Woody Shaw next, pray for me.

No! Blue Mitchell is one of my favorites! Thank you! I'm trying to find "I'll Close My Eyes". Got that one?
Thanks,

How is that album (Down With It)? I've heard it's pretty lite, but Chick Corea's on it... Any reviews (besides what's on AMG, which takes a pretty vague stand on it)?

IIRC, it's the same band as appears on "The Thing To Do". "Down With It" is good, "The Thing To Do" is, in my opinion, better. I'm not clear on why it's not in print currently.

Jeff,
Nice website! Lots of great stuff there to check out. I appreciate the Blue Mitchell transcriptions. Looking at your transcription of Hi-Heel Sneakers (also from "Down With It"), I found a couple of errors in my own transcription, which I began but never finished.

One of my favorite Blue Mitchell recordings.

Sadly, Bill Chase is pretty low on my list of guys to transcribe right now.

Woody Shaw is taking up all my energy. And patience.

Jeff,
You're probably tired of people chiming in with transcription request but I can't resist. There are very few solo transcriptions available of Conte Candoli's solo material. Any chance you might consider a few of his?

I have, and would, though I've been having trouble getting a reliable list of available recordings that folks think are top-drawer stuff.

Do you (or anyone else) have some favorite CDs that you can recommend?

- jeff

PS: Come to think of this, maybe I'll search the Recordings forum...

Well, one of my personal favorites is the quartet recording called "Portrait of a Count", and one his last recordings. The program is all standards whith the exception of 2 Candoli originals. Great stuff and Cante and the band bebop their butts off.

Hmm, that one appears to be out of print. I just ordered "Powerhouse", maybe I'll find something there to work with.

re: Conte..

I think the pinnacle of his soloing was on the "Salt Peanuts" album. SuperSax. circa '77.

"Loverman, confirmation, scrapple, salt peanuts, groovin high" IIRC.

Sadly, not released on CD.

Long, long ago! During a much younger time in my life, I was dating a girl whose father had a monster album collection. He was also into jazz. So, trying look like I was well rounded I asked for recommendations of jazz trumpeters. He said Blue Mitchell and probably recommend a record or two. I was more interested in his daughter than the recommendation and never bought a Blue Mitchell album. I will now, thanks to you and the other respondents to this thread.

Mark

FWIW, I did some shopping yesterday and found a postumously released album called "Candoli Live" which is pretty nice (on the Nager-Heyer label), recorded shortly before his death, released summer of last year.

Jeff,
Thanks for the heads up on the Candoli Live CD. I just ordered it so now you can go ahead and transcribe all the solos

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the transcriptions - Can I make a request for a Woody Shaw tune? "It might as well be spring" has a lovely solo and it's only 3 minutes long )

Thanks again...

Is that on the "Settings Standards" album? I haven't listened to it in a while, I'll check it out.

Part of the problem with writing out ballads is that they're often really hard to notate (fluctuations in time are exaggerated at slow tempos)...
