Greetings, list.
One new transcription for your entertainment, Clark Terry's solo on "Blueport", from the recording "The Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band / Live at the Village Vanguard".
You can find it here:
http://www.shout.net/~jmh/#recent
(Eventually it'll find a home in an area specifically dedicated to Clark.)
If you don't have this recording, I hope you'll look for it. The solo is a bit of a departure from what I've posted in the past, as it is the trumpet side of a bari/trumpet battle of sorts. During the exchanges, Mulligan and Terry get into a quote battle (at one point exchanging geographical quotes). You can hear the band losing it in the background at one point! I've tried my best to identify all the various quotes, but if I've missed any, please let me know.
Anyways, a great album that's only recently been rereleased on CD.
Corrections/comments welcome!
Regards,
Jeff

I sent it to Kurt to put up on his page if he's so inclined. Thanks for the kind words, Roddy. _________________ Jeff Helgesen

The quote you labeled as "Camptown Races" sounds more like "Let's All Sing Like the Birdies Sing" if you include the entire 4-measures including the IV & I chords.
Later (around 137) he quotes Lester Young's solo on Lester Leaps In.
This is more fun than a book full of Rich Willey tune titles. |

There's one vexing point in the solo I haven't been able to identify -- right after he quotes the Sousa march, there's some other thing he plays that Mel Lewis identifies and plays along with, so I know it's gotta be a quote...another march??! Hmmm...bar 254.
Thanks for the info, I'll update the transcription! |
