Just found this clip of him playing Jota 2, it is amazing how he can sway around like that and still play so centered

Wow. thank you so much for pointing out that clip. I never saw him on film before. I have to wonder if his stage presence is influenced by Louie Armstrong...

Brian, thanks for posting. Pushed me over the edge, and I ordered two CD's David Hickman recommended if one buys only two.

Happy Practicing,

For all you Mendez fans I've posted another video of Mendez on youtube. It's Mendez talking about the trumpet and then going on to perform the third movement of the Haydn. You can check it out at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=XryvsJOIAKA

Zoot,

A new one to watch and listen. Articulations so clean and crisp.

Thanks!

Every trumpet player needs AT LEAST one Mendez CD in their collection. The only problem is that, like potato chips, you can't stop with just one!

Got another clip up, it's with Mendez playing Flight of the Bumble Bee and his one breath Mexican Hat Dance. The bumble bee is especially great because the video is just a close up on Mendez's fingers.

HAHA, yeah, Mendez CD's are like potatoe chips, can't get just one. I've already bought out every single legit Mendez CD and have had to resort to bootlegs of school performances sold on ebay...... those are simply breathtaking too. His rubato and improvisation is even crazier live than what he recorded in the studios. I highly recommend you try and get your hands on a copy to see what Mendez sounded like when it was less business and more fun (although I imagine for Mendez every session with his horn was pure bliss).

Haha, I'm glad I could help inspire you with my posts of Mr. Mendez.

I've upped another video of Mendez, this time he's performing Zigeunerweisen. A tour de force if I ever saw one!

What a great trumpeter! Supremely crisp!

Although I personally think all his swaying and moving about was a bit distracting. But whatever works for him, obviously WORKS FOR HIM! He sounds great.

The Tres Mendez Polka is up, and you won't want to miss this one as Mendez invites his twin sons Ralph and Robert to play with him.
