There was a horrendous shooting today at Virginia Tech today, at least 22 killed by a single gunman. It was the worst school shooting in history. Please keep the families and friends of the dearly departed in your thoughts and prayers today.

www.cnn.com

the story is on there, it should be in the headlines if you wish for more information.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18134671/
the number of dead has risen to 31.
Unreal. A lot of my friend's children are planning on attending Tech (3 in the engineering school), this fall.
How was there a 2 hour lapse between the dorm shootings and the classroom shootings?

first let me say that I'm praying for those families...it's gonna be a tough time.

2ndly I bet VT will be sued...why? Because they didn't notify the students in time about the 1st shooting....AND b/c they lifted the lockdown......and that's when the students came out and more were killed. It's truly a tragic day.

There is no excuse why nothing was done inbetween the 1st shooting and the rampage that followed. No excuse at all.

I'm seriously perplexed by this!!!

I'm extremely disturbed and frightened for our society. It's enough to make me never want to leave my house. How did things get to be so broken in our country?

That is one big assumption. Best to get all of the info first.

Prayers to all affected.

The death toll is now 32, it is sad to see such terrible activity take place at an institution of education. If a single gunshot is fired off from within campus, you'd think they would evacuate it right? I believe that there is no excuse for what was done that day by the administration, such negligence is unacceptable, and immediate action should taken place to whoever in the administration didn't take the obvious, proper precautions to prevent such a catastrophe.

Tech has a total enrollment of somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000 students. Blacksburg has a permanent resident population of a few thousand IIRC.
1) If they evacuated the 5,000 - 10,000 students who live on campus, where would they go?
2) What would prevent the perpetrator from picking them off as they either walked a mile or so to their cars (for the ones that have cars on campus -- when I was at Tech they actively discouraged on-campus students from bringing cars), or walked a mile or so into town?

It's easy to say what the university "should have" done. But the initial incident (in the dorm) was a double homicide and the police apparently had reason to believe that the perpetrator had left the campus, which he may well have done. From the descriptions I've read, the perpetrator probably looked like a typical student, and he used two 9mm pistols that could easily be concealed as he moved through the student and town populations.

Before we start second-guessing what the people in charge decided to do, perhaps we should wait for the facts.

I studied with Allen Bachelder at Virginia Tech for many years. My parents live just a few miles from the school. What a shame.........over a woman....

I don't mean that in a massagonist kind of way, btw.

Watch the politics and ignorant stereotypes. They're not for sale on "any streetcorner" here either.

There are no marijuana bars here, and no window shopping for prostitutes either. Some of us have been to Amsterdam.

Way to second guess.

With 20-20 hindsight, it's pretty easy to Monday-morning quarterback the situation and say what might have stopped the second attack. Put yourself in the place of the police investigating what looked like a double-murder or murder-suicide and forget that you know what happened later. They shut down the dorm and the immediately surrounding area as they interviewed the residents and tried to figure out what was going on. Until I hear that they interviewed a witness that said, "An Asian man went running out of hear saying, 'I'll get them all'" I'll assume that the police did all that they reasonably could.

I expect the authorities (police and campus) acted about as well as they could in the situation. The second attack seems downright strange. Two hours late and that far away? It is a very sad situation.

Here are some plays written by the killer. Be warned that they are rather violent, contain language, and most of all very sad. This person apparently had a very messed up life and the fact that nothing was done about it that could have prevented his future actions is just... discouraging.

I think I want to go watch Pay It Forward again, just for... I dunno, moral inspiration or something.

Wow. How does someone even get to his senior year in college writing like that?
