While I was playing through the 3a warm-up earlier this evening, I found myself wondering what Stamp sounded like when he played. I realized that it's likely that I've heard him play but not known it was him -- in a movie, for example, or some other commercial work.

So now I'm wondering ... what would y'all recommend I listed to to hear his playing? Is there an "official discography" somewhere?

Thanks!

Steve,

James Stamp was Principal Trumpet with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra from 1929 – 1944. I was able to find three CDs that would be in the right timeframe to have James Stamp in the orchestra:

.Arkivmusic web site

This one has Robert Schumann Symphony No. 2.

.Arkivmusic web site

This one has Borodin Symphony No. 2.

Here’s the Mahler 1:

.Amazon web site

Good luck!

Do we know of any specific soundtracks that he played on?

I was again pondering this question ... since we have some new people perusing this forum, I thought I'd try to resurrect this discussion.

I understand that Stamp did a lot of commercial work (soundtracks, etc.) after his heart attack, which means I've almost certainly heard him play ... I just didn't know it? Does anyone know of even a few of the soundtracks he played on?

Thanks!

While in the 25th Infantry Divison Band at Schofield Barraks in Hawaii I studied with Bob Fleming who was at the time 2nd in Honolulu. Prior to that he was the lead trumpet in the Disney Studios from 1947-58. He and Stamp were good friends (he later arranged some lessons for me when I left Hawaii) from their time there. If I rememeber correctly Stamp was playing 3rd at the Disney studios. Keep in mind this was after his health issues required his retirement from Minneapolis. It is quite possible (even likely!) that Stamp had many other studio dates going on but at that point in his career I don't think he was playing much 1st trumpet.

With regards to his sound---wow! It was just so big and relaxed. He also played very lightly (I've heard it described as flute like) when needed and had the biggest, most in tune pedal C I've ever heard. This was in 1980, well past his prime.

Hope this helps some!
