Today's going to be my first lesson back from a 10 year lay-off...I can't wait to get started! I have a lesson with Bruce Haag and have read good things about him on here. I hate those first lessons where all of one's problems are laid bare, but feedback is the beginning of improvement, right?
Yay!

John, have fun. Hope you and Bruce hit it off like peas and carrots.
If you can, put your evaluation machine on hold for a bit. It'll kick in with a vengeance soon enough. _________________ 1972 Selmer Radial |

Peas and carrots indeed! He's a great teacher.
With my new-learned skills I even played for my grandfather over the phone. He was finally able to hear me play the cornet that he bought for me 10 years ago. The doctors don't expect him to live through the month, so that was a blessing I never thought I'd be able to give him. I figured today that a flawed tune over the phone is better than no tune at all!
Flinstones theme song isn't Flight of the Bumble Bee, but it's good enough for me, and hopefully gave him a reason to smile during all of this.
I fiddled around and practiced Lift High the cross today...maybe that'll be my second over-the-phone tune I play for him. That's always been a family favorite. _________________ Canadian Brass CB12-SP cornet |

John,
You have yourself one fine teacher! I know Bruce from years back when I lived in San Jose, California. Bruce is an all around nice guy and good friend. Happy lessons, happy practicing and I look forward to reading more about your continual progress with Bruce. _________________ For Online Lessons via Live Video, email

Thanks guys. Matt - I think Bruce is great, too. I'm very happy to have found a christian teacher like him...especially since one of my main goals is to play in our church's praise and worship band. I'm sure he can teach me some good worship tunes! _________________ Canadian Brass CB12-SP cornet |

Hi John. Welcome back. Those tunes you are playing for your grandfather really mean a lot to him. I hope you do it as often as you can.

He heard the recording I made of Lift high the cross and said, "He has a really clear tone and a nice strong attack." That was probably one of the best compliments I've ever received since it came from him
I just recorded the carnival of venice this evening...he'll hear it in the morning. It's definitely not flawless, but I am so happy that I haven't lost so much of my ability during these 10 years that I'm unable to play.
We need a section on this message board where people can upload sound files. We have that on www.banjohangout.org and folks really make use of it. It's a cool feature for all skill levels.
I hope you guys are hugging your loved ones today.

My granddaddy died this morning...I am so happy that I was able to record carnival of venice for him. That has made this much easier to deal with. I hope to play a bit with him when I see him in heaven again one day. _________________ Canadian Brass CB12-SP cornet |

You will.
Sometimes we are motivated to do things we don't always understand, that become clear with time. I think this is one of those cases.
God Bless you and keep you, and all those whose lives were part of your grandfather's. We all read about how the sins of the father are visited unto the third generation, and tend to forget the blessings of the father carry much, much further. |

Thank you for your kind words. I definitely think that if the blessings of the father carry a long way, we're going to be living in high spiritual cotton because of that man. I lived with him for over 6 years and never heard him utter a single cross word, and that's no exaggeration. He is a saint, for sure. I'm thankful he gave me a love for music so I can join in the praises that he's certainly singing.

This is an old thread, but I feel like I'm doing Bruce a disservice without mentioning that I was able to stand in front of a church full of mourners and play a duet of "It Is Well" with my cornet and my wife on the violin. That was the most humbling and musically satisfying moment of my life, because I could honor a man who paid his way through the depression and college by playing the trumpet, using a gift he couldn't truly afford to give me but sacrificed to do so anyhow. Bruce and God made that possible. I'm so glad I could send him home with the cornet he gave me...it meant the world. _________________ Canadian Brass CB12-SP cornet |
