Hello!!! At first I have to apologise for my english, I hope everyone will understand:)
I finished my second year of studying trumpet on Music Academy and now I have 3 months of holidays. Not along time ago I heard about K-tongue modified, I stardet to search some information in internet and decided to try this method of tonguing. After few minutes of practicing this method I saw that my tone was full in all register, attacking higher notes was easier and there were moments that I started to understand this sentence about leting the air doing job and changeing pitch by tongue. Now I am in seventh day of playing K-tongue modified and I still can't play for 100% like I was playing before. My attack is not clear as it was and with good attack the only thing I can play are scales or something. I still have problems to use this method in music - hummel concerto, neruda etc. What would you like to suggest me, what are Your experiences about developing this method and How long did it take You to get on it and play better than before?
I treat trumpet very serious, I play very good and beautiful but i feel that work of my tongue was not efficient as it can be. If there are some profesional trumpeters or people who understand playing trumpet and developed this method please answer:) |

Wikol:
This is a major change and will most likely take months of daily practice until you really begin to be comfortable with it. I suggest practicing Clarke's Technical Studies with just a "K" syllable and also with the "T" syllable of the K tongue modified. Be careful that you do not rigidly press the tip of the tongue into the back of the lower teeth. There are many other posts here on the TH about K tongue modified.
I suggest also reading this thread:

I would also suggest starting your routine with material like Claude's Daily Trumpet Routines book and/or St. Jacome - p. 157 and following. DTR has K tonguing and you should add K and some other models onto St. Jacome.
The change can be different for each person. I've had students switch to KTM and in two days be playing easily to a high F when they previously couldn't play a high C. Most students can make the change in 3 months or less. The point Claude always made was that you will know when to use it when it's ready. You don't want to go jeopardize a gig trying to do KTM and embarrassing yourself.
You might want to also listen to the free lectures of Claude on my site. That should be helpful to hear it directly from him. I also wrote an article called "What To Practice" in which I summarize my ten years with Claude and how he used all the various books. It's not really practice routines, but showing you how to think about using various material to cover those 7 Basic Items that make everything work.

Even now when I am not good K tounge modified user I see that it is good for trumpet players. I will read and listen all those texts and sound files and I hope it will help me. I am from country where this method is not popular and there is no person who would tell me how to do it. I started to search some metods because I was not happy because of my playing. Everything is good, tone, makeing music, I play hard pieces like hummel or bozza concertino but sometimes my lips are getting wasted and I dont know why. Playing on the trumpet give me a lot of fun and happy, it is one of the most important thing to me but It would be great to do it without getting tired so much and to be sure that everyday, maybe not for 100% but everything will be working on level where I will be known as professional player. It is great to have reply from You, I won't forget to write something about my progress with this method:) Thank You very much! |

You say you cannot comfortably use the K tongue in Hummel or Neruda after 7 days. How long did you practice your "T" tonguing before you felt comfortable playing those pieces?? Be patient. I remember being humbled the first time I was ask to do a string of K tonguing-I was already playing professionally quite a bit. As bad as it sounded, I stuck with it. Now I'd say I can K tongue as well as most people can single tongue. I'll do it in rehearsals for kicks, and for real on certain things that are easier.
You're on the right track. Be patient! |
