I am interested in buying a few turn-of-the-century cornet CDs. I appreciated any recommendations.

I want to hear true cornet sounds.

Thanks.

Ken

My favorite performers of the turn-of-the-century cornet literature are Gerald Schwartz and Maurice Andre. They both have very rich, warm and un-trumpet-like cornet tones. Wynton Marsalis has whirlwind-like technique on the Carnaval album, but it sounds more like a trumpet than a true cornet sound to my ear. Hakan Hardenberger has recorded a number of cornet solos as well with albums like At the Beach, but his sound, while a great wonderful sound, also sounds fairly trumpet-like to me.

Good luck.

Rich

I would recommend that you search for recordings by the English cornetist Roger Webster.

He is currently principal cornet with the world famous Black Dyke Band, and is regarded by many here as the best "top man" in the business.

Heard him play recently .. absolutely flawless...

There is a very good book on CD- ROM called Pioneers In Brass. It has bio's and recordings from many of the great cornet soloists from the turn of the century. You can find it at

http://www.bookbay.com/PioneersInBrass.htm

Also Malcolm McNab sells cassette tapes of the old cornet soloists on his web site.
