Additional Reading by PH

To PH,
In your book technical studies for the modern trumpet, you recommend the following addtional reading materials: Inner Game of Music, Psycho Cybernetics, Maximum Performance, and Talk's Body. I was wondering if you have any more reading recommendations on books that have come out since 1983 when your book was published. Or any other recommendations.

I think PH will agree with me on this one. Another book that Mr. Adam has us read is "Zen in the Art of Archery." That's one of my favorites.

OK, I realize the question was directed to Pat but as a former Reference Librarian I can't help but respond when someone asks about books.

I've heard a couple of Adam students recommend "Golf in the Kingdom" by Michael Murphy. Personally I really enjoyed Sam Keen's "Learning to Fly: Trapeze, Reflections on fear, Trust, and the Joy of Letting Go." Two other books that Mr. Adam recommended were "As A Man Thinketh" by James Allen and "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" By Robert M. Pirsig. The first book is a short book on self image and positive thinking that was written about 100 years ago. The second is "the fabulous journey of a man in search of himself." (from the book's cover) He tries out different philosophies, religions and the latest new age fads (the book was written in 1974) in quest for truth. It's been 20 years since I last read it. Worth a second read after 20 years of (hopefully) growth and maturity.

Hi BR,
I have read both of those books and they are great recommendations. While I was studying with Michael Mossman, he recommended reading a lot of self help, "what you think, you will become" books. Here are a few more for the list:

Mastery by George Leonard
Man's Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl
Awaken the Giant Within By Anthony Robbins
Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill

Mike Mossman has a masters degree in Tony Robbins' Life Mastery program and suggested that his students read Awaken the Giant Within or Unlimited Power also by Robbins.

Also, I wanted to correct lively's opening post. I recommend the "Inner Game of TENNIS" far higher than the "Inner Game of MUSIC". I think the tennis book is better written, and FOR ME actually relates better to what I have faced as a musician than the music book (which is certainly an OK book).
