Mr. Adam had some players play only one pitch on the pipe, and he had other students play multiple pitches. It all depended on what Mr. Adam determined would help the student the most at that point in their development. Many people do, however, play more than just the "Eb" in the staff.

I personally use the previously mentioned Eb, one the octave lower, one the octave higher and also a ninth higher. This has also been a constant with all my trumpet teachers.

Best thing you can do is get with someone like Karl Sievers, Bob Bacca, Greg Wing, Mark Wilcox, Pat Harbison, "Billy B" and of course, Mr. Adam and have them help you determine what is best.

Thanks for the reply. I'd really love to grab a lesson with someone who studied with Mr. Adam, or get a lesson with Mr. Adam himself. Unfortunately, I live in Boston and travelling isn't a possibility in the near future. In the meantime, I'm really trying to just grasp the concepts as much as I can and figure out what brings the best sound for me. Thanks again.

I've been trying out some of these concepts for about a week, and have to say that I really enjoy the results. I feel more in line with the horn every day, and that is already leading to an easier approach to playing. I look forward to doing more of it.

I have to admit I feel like a total caveman! I've ben working professionally for 18 years, and no one has EVER told me about leadpipe buzzing!!

I came home on saturday after a trial-week in the Radio Symphony here in Sweden feeling REALLY busted in my chops. This whole year has ben extremely hectic wit auditions and solo performances as well as taking care of my "real" gig at the same time.

My lips really hurt, and I thought: let's just make it to the holidays! It's only ten more days!

Yeaterday morning, I stumbled in on this forum, read about the leadpipe buzzing thing, tried it yesterday and during warm-up today- I'm as good as new again!

It's a revelation!

Thanks everybody for explaining it so that even a trumpetplayer up in the cold north can make it work!!

Back to the practice-cave......

Does anyone have a link to a video on how leadpipe buzzing should sound like? I seem to be doing it wrong coz every time I do it, I feel like my chops get swollen or stiffen up

Man, if you don't need a warm up, you are a lucky guy. But the warm up makes you feel good like it would an athlete.
