Marvin C. Perry, II

Marvin C. Perry II was born in Birmingham, AL, and earned a B.M. from the Eastman School of Music and an M.M.Ed. from the University of Montevallo (AL). His major teachers have included Arnold Jacobs, Sidney Mear, Lloyd Geisler, John Head, Barry Shank and Walter Moeck. Before joining the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in 1975, he played with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the United States Army Band in Washington, D.C.

Perry is on the faculty of Butler University and has held visiting professorships at DePauw and Indiana universities and Grace College. He has been a frequent soloist with the ISO as well as a Side by Side section coach. He and his wife are the parents of five children and are active members of their church. When not on stage, Perry enjoys riding his motorcycle (with the side car!) and camping.

Joined the ISO: 1975
Primary musical studies: Bachelor of Music, Eastman School of Music; Master of Music Education, President’s Award for outstanding achievement in the performing arts, named distinctive alumnus, University of Montevallo
Teachers included: Arnold Jacobs, Lloyd Geisler, Sidney Mear, John Head, and Walter Moeck

While at the Eastman School, Marvin performed with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded on the CRI and Vox labels with the Eastman Wind Ensemble and the Eastman Brass Ensemble. He played for three years with the U.S. Army Band in Washington, D.C., where he appeared as soloist with the band and with other ensembles in the area. He also played in two chamber groups, Baroque Arts Chamber Orchestra and the Arlington Symphony in the Washington, D.C. area during the early ’70s. He then performed for two seasons with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Connoisseur Concerts there. Marvin has taught on the faculty of Butler University and has served as visiting instructor at Indiana University, DePauw University and Grace College.

Marvin and his wife Anne have five children ranging in age from 19 to 37. “We have lived in the same 1880s farm house for the last 34 years,” Marvin says. “Our oldest son Marvin and middle daughter Lora are engineers, mechanical and biomedical. Helen, our oldest daughter, was in social work but is now pursuing a degree in architecture, and Daniel, our youngest son, is a string bass major at Indiana University. Our youngest daughter Ellen is forever young and keeping her parents from becoming lonely in their old age.” The family is involved in Special Olympics of Indiana with Ellen and the MasterWorks Festival, now held in Winona Lake. In the summer of 2010 they also participated in a festival in the Henan Province of China.

The Perrys regularly take fun family adventures. In the past they have toured the country with as many as three children in the sidecar attached to their motorcycle. In 1989, Father Marvin and son Marvin rode a motorcycle sidecar outfit all the way to Alaska. The coldest part of the trip was on August 24 in West Yellowstone, Montana, when the temperature reached 29 degrees Fahrenheit. A particularly memorable family moment for Anne was when, “one winter, Marvin repaired and refurbished an old BMW motorcycle in the family dining room. I will not let him do that again!”

Michael Farrow

Michael's background as a professional musician, playing trumpet in symphony orchestras has been central to his approach to recording. While attending Indiana University as a music major, he developed the skills of score reading and transposition. At age 19, he became Associate Principal Trumpet with the Dallas Symphony. In the late 60's, Michael was appointed Principal Trumpet with the Indianapolis Symphony where he also appeared as a featured soloist during his 7 year tenure. In 1972, he co-founded the first 16 track studio in Indiana and helped develop a thriving jingle industry in Indianapolis. Michael is frequent guest speaker and UCLA.

Any info on Paul Hilgeman? I know he retired from ISO. He was my first influence to play trumpet & I studied with him for a while on the mid-70s.

I grew up listening to their concerts at the Murat Temple downtown, then when they moved to Clowes Hall.

I found that Paul Hildeman was a member of the music faculty at Indiana Central College between 1965 and 1968 (based on Alumni News flyers showing him as a soloist with the Wind Ensemble) after doing several Google searches and was in the 7th Army Symphony Orchestra (ASO) from 1958-1960. I also found that he retired from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (as a section player) in 2001 but I could not find his starting date but I would assume it was in the mid 1960s. If anyone has additional information, we can certainly include it in this folder.

Thanks!

Not sure when Paul started with the ISO (I'm guessing early 60s) but he was 2nd trumpet in the section and I'm pretty sure 1st trumpet w/ the ISO brass quintet. Also spent many summers in the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra.

Studied at Northwestern and lived in Ren Schilke's basement when Ren was doing the first Schilke trumpets.

He was born in China (parents were missionaries).

My dad (a clarinetist) worked a lot of German and Dixieland band gigs with Paul. Paul would bring whatever the last horn he used on the ISO concert to their gigs (usually getting there toward the end of the 2nd set) - usually a C, sometimes a Bb or D or Eb or picc...and would WAIL away the rest of the gig.
