Upload to photobucket and copy the img-delimited link. Paste the img link here. Your photo will appear to be here, though it is really housed at photobucket |

Here are some pictures of my King 2003 (model number, not the year) cornet from the early 1980s. I've been a trumpet player for over 50 years, but just lately I have grown to prefer the sound of this cornet over my trumpet. I would make cornet my primary instrument, but I have too many big band gigs coming up on trumpet. And no, it is not for sale.

Hi Dale,
I thought it was time to bring your Cool Cornet thread back to the top. Thanks for posting the cornet page from the 1980s King Musical Instruments brochure. I was a King dealer back then and remember those 2000 Series instruments well. Too bad UMI destroyed King Musical Instruments as an independent company.
The 2003 and 1503 cornets both came with the pro model wood shell case like mine shown below. The cases pictured in the brochure were the student 602 cornet cases, so perhaps someone in marketing wasn't on the ball.
It's nice to see all the beautiful cornets on your thread.

That's pretty cool. Looking for a good, modern short cornet, I came close to buying a King 2003 back in the 1980's but ended up with nothing but the brochure...ha ha
So, is this Opus 7 basically the same instrument? I notice the bore sizes are a bit different, and the third valve slide has a water key and is missing the stop..

The "Opus 7" cornet (late 1970s) was the forerunner of the "2003" cornet (hit market in October 1980.) They are very similar with the exceptions you noted above.
The fabulous Tom Saunders of Detroit played a King Opus 7 and he loved it. It was a gift to him from his wife. Tom was not only a great cornet player, but also a wonderful person. He had an incredible band called Tom Saunders' Surfside Six. _________________ C. G. Conn 60B Super Connstellation

I remember those Opus 7 cornets being advertised in Down Beat mag. I went to Giardenellis to try one. As I recall they didn't cost much for the time. I opted to by a used King Silver Bell cornet which was not a particularly good horn, but I recall it was very well built and had one of those sterling silver bells which was gold plated on the inside. I ultimately sold it to Robert Giardenelli for $90. I guess I got ripped off but I needed the money to by a Cousnon flug. This was all in 78-82.
Thank you. _________________ Now:

I recently bought a '66 Holton C-201 cornet on eBay and received it last night. Looks to be in almost perfect condition - I'm guessing it was the replacement for the Stratodyne since it shares many of the same features. Rose brass bell, yellow brass lower valve block and slide crooks, and the rest is nickel. Quickie photos on the kitchen floor last night...

Noticed I hadn't posted this one I bought a number of months ago - a 1954 Conn 80A. Pretty nice original condition, plays well.

My rare 1962 Martin Committee #3 LB, in original condition.
This was held by the girl on the bus (at least I'd like to think so)...

The pictures of my 1915 Boston 3 Star NE PLUS ULTRA cornet from the eBay auction I won:

A picture of the horn after I received it and spent several hours polishing it (and oiling the valves which now work flawlessly):

WINNER!!!
I recently had the pleasure of using the horn for the beautiful cornet parts in the trumpet book of Billy Elliot during a recent run of the show.
Best wishes,
John Mohan

My latest acquisition before and after some minor repairs ended up buying a bell flare mandrill for it.
