Hello All -
I have the chance to purchase a Yamaha 9820C (Bb/A piccolo) Piccolo for $1900 brand new including case, two mouthpipes and extra 3rd slide without the rotary valve. Is this a fair price. I thought this yamaha custom horn was priced even above the Schilke P54. I like the horn it projects great. It for me is a cross between the old selmers and a P54. Thoughts and Opinions welcome. If I buy it and want to resell it what do you think I could ask?
Thanks

Well I've never owned/played one but I've seen the resell value of around $1000, tops $1300 in "new"(played a few times but basically new) condition.

Thats not too bad. I see some places have them for more in their used sections. Dillon's has one now. But I know what they ask and what they can be had for are very different. I need a pic to play some Xmas gigs.I can rent one for the gigs. WAS CURIOUS IF I COULD FLIP IT AFTER AND BREAK EVEN. It is a player, do I really want to tie up money in a horn I only play twice a year?

I've played them before and they are quite nice little horns. However, unless it's truly something special, at 1900 bucks, you'll have to wait quite a while, if ever, to pull that back out of it. There was one on ebay about a month ago without the 3rd trigger that sold for about 800 and there's still one for 1700 that has been re-listed several times. For Dillon's, I'd probably offer in the 1250 range and see where that takes ya.

Just trying to figure the hedge. If I rent it for six months a year. each it will cost me around $600/year. If I pay $1900 for it and sell it in May June for 1300 I break even. If I keep it another year and sell it for around a thousand I am OK and if I keep it 3 years and can get 800-1000 I am still OK. Do these numbers seem reasonable?

I've played and owned many piccolos.
This is one of the best I've ever played, if not the best.

If you're figuring only on what it would cost you to rent the horn, I believe it is totally worth it. But again, 1900 is still a little higher than what these are moving for. Wouldn't it be nicer to consider this horn paid for in 2 years instead of three? I would still ask them to move a little lower.

I feel part of what is killing the resale on these is the Jinbao/Dillion interpretations of this model. Why pay 1,000 when I can get a similar horn for 495 new? I have played both I prefer the original by a wide margin!

If you're looking for a horn to flip, look somewhere else. If you're looking for a killer piccolo (a keeper) for a reasonable price, then this is an extremely good one.

A 9820C for $1000, as good as good as new, all original with the extra third slide and case sounds like the deal of the century to me...

That's what I was thinking too. I've never seen it for anywhere near $1000. I think you're thinking of a different model - possibly the 6810 short model. That's a plausible used price for one of those.

Hmm,
the thought of finding a mint 9820C for $1000 clearly made me more nervous than I realized.

I was going to say the same thing, but I was going to be more blunt.

Don't trust financial decisions to random people on the internet.

To me it sounds like a great price for a great piccolo. If you decide to ditch it in a few months there's a good chance you'll break even, but be prepared for the worst...

Here's the one I mentioned earlier. It seems to be priced "right" but I didn't see that it has the extra 3rd slide. As for the 1000 bucks starting point, that's incredibly low for anything I've seen. I also haven't seen them sell lower than 1500. I've been trying to pick one of these up for the last few months myself so I've been watching.... I just can't give high market value considering I still have my Scherzer and a P5-4 getting the job done just fine.

good luck!

also, please let me edit any of my previous statements! After all the years in school you'd think I'd learn to read.... 1900 for a BRAND NEW 9820C is a steal. Buy your horn, hide it from your wife and enjoy!

It was selling new for about $3000 before Yamaha replaced the model. If you can afford the $1900, it's a great horn at a great price. As far as re-sale, this is not a stable enough economic time to predict with any confidence. Two or three years ago, these were selling for over $2000 used. and worth it. You should probably not plan on buying anything new with the idea of reselling it used for the same price. Not a good plan in any economy.
