Chicago Prinicpal Trumpet position

Does anyone know the reason why the CSO is auditioning for a new principal trumpet?

Also, from what I heard, Craig was not granted tenure.

Can anybody verify this?

These old (1800-type) orchestras has mostly white men sitting there in black suits...
.. and an older white man with a stick in front, dressed like a penguin.

Still today (in 2003), you don't see many African American people or women in these orchestras.

Either change that, or put these orchestras in a museum.

So, CSO, now's your chance to be brave:

NOBODY will be "put" in the chair.

There will be an audition.

There will be several rounds.

There may or may not be a winner.

Why don't we all just wait and see what happens, and stop this fruitless SPECULATION and "Arm-Chair Quarterbacking."

Well, imagine if they used such methods when selecting "a principal" for a nation?

The next time you guys "over there" selected a president it would not be just a guy "put" in the chair because of his heritage (the son of a former principal) and because of his connections to multinational companies.

Or in Italy, there would not be a guy "in the chair" (prime minister) that got there because he owned most ot the media.
And it would not be "a guy" who could stop the judges from prosecuting him.

All in all, we should not worry so much about the selections of principal trumpets. I'm sure they will find a good guy or even a girl.

More to worry about the selection of "principals of nations".

Thanks for the clarification, Romey. In fact, I knew him to have been associate principal some years back, but recently I have seen him playing principal on certain occasions, and incorrectly assumed he had advanced to that position.

I had a nice conversation with Craig a few weeks ago when he paid a visit to try out a Martin Committee I had for sale. I didn't put him on the spot to ask "what happened" at the CSO, but he mentioned he was on his way to Coral Gables to teach at the U. of Miami, and he seemed very excited about the prospect. He said, in fact, that he is looking forward to playing some salsa.

We did talk a bit about the pressure associated with playing principal -- or playing anything, for that matter -- in a top orchestra and he said it's huge, and he seemed to me like he's relieved to be moving on.

I hadn't met Craig before this and I can say you won't find a more pleasant guy. After he tried the horn for a while we played some of Rich Willey's bop duets and had a blast.

It's always nice when you run into a great player who's also a great person.

I don't like posting rumors...but this came from a pretty good source. Craig Morris will fill in for Bob Sullivan in the NY Phil. next year. Can anyone verify this?

havent heard that but i know that bob is supposed to play associate in cleveland from september to december. i wouldve bet that another guy would have gotten the call to fill in for bob whom i wont name, but thats the way things go sometimes.

I am a Puerto Rican woman trumpet player - not many of those I imagine- and Mzony, I would be the first one to rip into someone if he was being a bigot. But I completely agree with you (maybe I'm a bigot too then) - people need to pay their dues and earn their jobs.

So if a Puerto Rican woman trumpet player never makes a full-time orchestra, it's because one didn't earn that for herself.
