The crap you have to put up with with the cast. The cast I just finished working with were terrible. 3 singers who were clueless about pitch & style & time, the 4th stood out only because the others were so bad. Many of the dancers were 1st contract, yet because they're in the "cast" they got privileges & treatment you could only dream about.

This cast was so young and immature and untalented that we called them the "Kindergarten Kast."

Oh yeah - anyone in the cast can complain about you & your playing, but can you reciprocate? NFW.

They thought they were great, but what they never thought about was the only reason they were there is because...yes, they were "the best of the best", but that's the best of those who auditioned keeping in mind the company WILL fill every slot in the cast.

6 months on the gig and there were dancers who still missed easy moves and singers who still botched entrances. It was humiliating.

Let's see...on a 12 day cruise..the singers worked maybe 9 hours total (rehearsals & performances), and some of the dancers (those who taught dance classes)...maybe 11. And those are all padded times.

It's been a while since anything was added to this thread. I saw this audition notice at a local college where I'm playing "The Drowsy Chaperone" (GREAT show if ya get a chance to play it).

See the above description of a typical cast member work week & how much they can get paid.

As far as I know, musicians are still in the same $1800 - $2250 a month range, and you work a bunch more hours and have next to zero privileges.

I just finished reading this thread, since you bumped it. Man, this is fascinating reading! Thanks, Tim, for taking all the time to write so much.

Hey guys. I have my first audition with Lime Entertainment, and there is something that's bothering me. I am NOT a good high range player. I've got a High D, but only a few in me. I'm a much more talented soloist/improvisor. I play with dozens of mutes, and am excellent at weaving in and out under a vocalist. I'm just nervous that I will get parts too high for me to play...I'm not a screamer. I find people get tired of that aspect of playing very quickly. Should I give up? Is a strong high note range required?

By all means, take every audition you can. What you'll gain in experience far outweighs any possible outcome.

But you need to be very straight with them about your range limits. Let them decide if that makes you a good fit for the job or not.

ps. You'll need only 4 of those dozens of mutes - straight cup Harmon (bring the stem just in case) & plunger.
