I've reworked my 5C. All that play on the PATRICK 5Z or old LOUD 3Z will like this!

It's the 5Z rim, on my 3C cup with my classical back-bore and 27 drill.

It is more comfortable and is easier to play than the old 5C. The cup design has more volume for a broader/bigger sound, but because of the design, you don't lose endurance or range.

Here's an example of one of my 30 plus ringtones from the website.
These are off of the "One for Maynard" Cd that can also be download either one track at a time or the full album.
This is a band that features some of Nashville's session brass players.

PATRICK Mouthpieces will now be available at Thompson Music as well as through me directly.

http://www.thompsonmusic.com

They won't have product up on their website for a bit, but give Mike a call and tell him what you're looking for.

Also, check out their wide selection of horns. They're a GREAT resource for all of us brass players!

I'm very happy to say that I will finally be able to be at my first ever ITG conference this year. I'll have a table in the main room with all of my lines of mouthpieces.

Thompson music will also have my product present at their table. Please stop by, introduce yourself and try the pieces out. I will be present at the table all day every day. Thanks!

If any players go to ITG you need to stop by Steve's table. I have been playing the new 5C with the 3C cup and a 81M. Both are comfortable and efficient to play. My tuning has improved and because of the efficient design I have found that it improves my phrasing and sustaining of notes. Everything is a little smoother.

I used the 5C in church last week and the trumpet player sitting next to me plays professionally. She kept saying I can't believe how dead on we are in tune. We were! The horn player leaned over one time and said you guys were so together that it sounded if one trumpet was playing. It was this way throughout the service. I know I am playing more in tune due to the mouthpiece. She plays a Bach with a 3C mouthpiece and that day I was playing my Kanstul 1537 and the Patrick 5C.

The rims on the 5C and 81m are very comfortable.

So, if you get a chance to stop by and try it at ITG please do so. Also, if you aren't there I believe both Dillons and Thompson Music have trial periods for their mouthpieces.

Mike

Hey Mike. Thanks for the kind words and plug. I appreciate that as well as the feedback about your new mouthpiece.

ITG was great and I'll post more as I have time. One of my highlights was when Jens came to the table and ended up leaving with the 5.3C. He really liked it. I know that he sounds great on pretty much everything, but he sounded wonderful on this at my table.

Anyways, I'll post more soon after I decompress and get a little caught up.

How would you compare the size of these rims? (Super close? Exact?)

The rims are very comparable in inner diameter, but the outer diameter and contour are very different. For most people, they compliment each other, but if the 81M seems to weird after playing the 5.3C, I recommend that you try the CR81M which has a more conventional contour. I personally prefer the flatter rim profile of the standard 81M. It gives my chops more support.
But that's just me.

To add to what Mike/TptBenge has said above, I am also now using the 81M (for the past month). I emailed Steve before May and have used it for the past five weeks. I have waited to post until I have had a chance to use this on a few gigs. My warm-up and legit/solo playing is all done on either a Stork 3C or Bach Artisan 3C; for most orchestra pops type things, I use a Reeves 3C; for my church ensemble work and big band, a Stork 3E. For most "lead" playing I do, I use a Yamaha 14a4a. My request to Steve was for something with more sparkle and ease of use for my upper register playing. His recommendation was the 81M. I have used this on 2 big band jobs, 2 small orchestra concerts (one church group and one pops program with a local orchestra)-the 811M is very comfortable and an easy switch from any of my 3 size pieces. The rim is very comfortable, with just enough drop into the cup to help late in a playing day to help keep one from 'bottoming out'. I feel that I am past the honeymoon phase with this and plan to keep this as part of my mpc arsenal (as Roger Ingram describes, having the right tool for the right job). There are some great players, teachers techs and mpc makers working today and Steve's talent, customer service and patience put him in this league. If you are having issues, please contact Steve. He is very generous with his time. Keep in mind, Steve is very busy with live dates and studio playing, but has a real passion to help make this easier for all of us. Thanks Steve.

Thanks Russell. You're the best. Appreciate the affirmation and glad that they're working for you. Hopefully have the MF1 Vintage for you soon. They should be to the platers by now.

I just want to publicly state how much I appreciate the communication and service that Steve provided to me as I ordered one of his mouthpieces this week.

Initially, I emailed Steve to ask about ordering one of his tops. I wanted to try his newly designed 5C, and wanted to make sure I ordered the new version not the old version. Steve wrote back a long email cautioning me about using this top with the backbore I had, as in his experience it makes a very out-of-balance mouthpiece that I might not be happy with. He even volunteered to send me his one-piece 5C and pay for return shipping if I did not like it and wanted to try just the top. In later emails, he gave me further guidance about what to expect from his mouthpiece, how it would be different than my current piece, and how to best approach the acclimation period.

I have ordered pieces from several custom mouthpiece makers, many of whom make great pieces and are very popular here on Trumpetherald, but I have never had anyone come remotely close to the care Steve put into this transaction. And I am just a lowly middle school band director from North Carolina.

I look forward to trying the 5C. Should arrive today or tomorrow.

Russ, glad you like the 12C.

I'm consistently playing my 7.3C and CR81M. I used to wander to others every now and then, but I always came back to Patrick! Now I don't wander anymore!

Steve is the real-deal as a musician, mouthpiece manufacturer, and retailer. Those three in combination often don't work well together, the business side typically suffers due to poor customer service. Steve is very much on top of the business side of things. He's very responsive and turns around orders very quickly. I love the MF1 I purchased from him. Having a player at this level of ability with the resources to design and manufacture his own mouthpieces is unique. He's very knowledgeable.

BTW, if you've never heard his playing, I found this clinic, which was very informative, and gives you a taste of his ability on trumpet. A very versatile player.
