The Flow Studies were a packet of etudes that Vincent Cichowicz put together. Within the packet are the Long Tone Studies (sometimes called "Flow Studies"). The book to which Poochie refers has all of these famous VCI and VCII exercises written out, a great article by Vincent Cichowicz and commentaries from many of his famous former students.

The OP made 4 quick posts, and vanished. Sort of surprised it wasn't 5, but whatever. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

Prof practiced with Booker Little as a young man, studied with at least Herseth, Vincent Cichowicz and Vacchiano. He possessed incredible insight on how to play the trumpet. He extended that knowledge on to many of those trumpet players I try and emulate. They've all insane abilities. I know Darren got to spend good time with Prof and Donald Byrd and knows.
Wolfgang Guggenberger's "Basics Plus",Philip Savard's "Some Really3 Cool Things and Some Other Stuff" cover some of the same ground. I've been reading postings here by M. Chichowicz about his new book that will probably fold into the Guggenberger and Savard efforts nicely.
I know I preach to the choir. It's not just the flow studies but supporting/amplifying explanations on how to manipulate and direct the air, how to properly support air and all of those Herseth, Cichowicz, Jacobs' insights.

It is no coincidence that both my father and Bill Fielder both have flow studies out there. Mr. Fielder was a student of my father's starting in the mid-sixties and they remained lifelong friends. I remember my dad telling me that Bill would call once every few months from the time he studied with him until just before my father's death in 2006. He often spoke of Bill with great fondness and as a child back then, I just remember Bill's warmness and his beautiful smile. He was a wonderful man and I wish I would have visited him at Rutgers like I set out to do on so many occasions. "Don't put off til tomorrow what you can do today"; Words that I wish I would have taken more to heart.
With regard to the flow studies from Bill, I'm not sure if they are direct descendants of my father's or they are one's he developed himself. It would be interesting to check them out. It wouldn't surprise me if Bill did a completely original set of studies. I'd love to see them, myself. Bill was a wonderful trumpet player and teacher and one of the nicest men I ever met.
As far as my father's flow studies are concerned, Mark Dulin and I have just released a book of my father's Long Tone Studies, published by Studio 259 Prod. in conjunction with Rob Roy MacGregor's, Balquhidder Music. We are "unveiling" it at ITG this week. We will also be following that book up with another volume, which will include the Flow Studies. It will be an amazing version with some exciting surprises that you won't be able to find in any other version of his studies.
For now though. if you're interested in the first book of Long Tone Studies, it will be available at ITG or by going onto the www.balquhiddermusic.com site. I am very happy with how it turned out and I am sure my dad would have been proud to have his name on it.
