Excitingly someone has posted a Flugel horn YFH-631 with serial 000133 with an original purchase date of 1973. This will hopefully provide a good reference point for the other Flugels and commencement of production of this model.

On another point, please check you select the correct model number when submitting your instrument to the DB. Instruments out of range or incorrect show up pretty quickly.

I've edited the way the serial number database handles serial numbers in an effort to avoid the "0"'s being lost when they are the first digit.

If your serial number is listed incorrectly feel free to add it again with a note as to which is the incorrect one.

Lpennel: thanks for posting the list of MODELs. The same list can be found in my other thread relating to MODEL's. The list you posted is actually from a Japanese website and was last updated in 1991. Not only is it incomplete due to its age, it is also incomplete due to the fact that it only deals with Japanese home market instruments. The historic prices are actually in Japanese Yen. Search this forum for my thread regarding Yamaha Trumpet MODEL's.

This thread is relating to Yamaha SERIAL numbers.

The model list you quote in your post was originally lifted from a Japanese website and translated to English. For more accurate info I suggest search the horn section of this forum for my thread of Yamaha MODEL numbers.

With regard to the "Tomo del Show" indication. I have tried translating it to and from every conceivable language but not had any success. I now believe that it was translated poorly originally or even truncated when originally post and that it is sufficiently corrupted not to allow that original meaning to be discovered. Is there any chance it might just mean "shepards crook"?

Note that back in the '70's the YFH-631 was available in lacquer or silver-plate. Either way it had a rose brass bell underneath said lacquer or sliver-plate.

Hi John, thanks for the tip regarding the YFH-631.

So far the information I have suggests the Yamaha Flugelhorn range was introduced sometime in 1970/71. By 1974, the catalog W-42L - Yamaha - Brass Instruments (1974) lists the YFH-631 as lacquer only and the YFH-731 as silver plate. A brief scan through this catalog will reveal that ALL of the 600 series instruments were available as lacquer only and the 700 series as their silver plate equivalent. Even the lower range instruments us the "S" letter to denote a silver plate version of a model available in both lacquer and silver. This hold true right across the entire Yamaha range of brass instruments.

Unfortunately, simply having a silver plated YFH-631 now does not confirm that the finish is original. Over the course of time many instruments have been refinished so I can only rely on marketing material, ad's, even receipts.

If you are able to supply some material confirming the existence of a factory supplied YFH-631 in silver plate I'd love to add the model to the list.

Note that the original YFH-631 in lacquer with a rose brass bell should not be confused with the later model introduced in 2001, the gold brass bell version YFH-631G/GS in lacquer AND silver plate.

thanks for adding your flugels to the serial number database.

I am interested in the story behind your 631. You state it was bought at the Schilke factory. As most know Schilke was involved with the design and development of the Yamaha range right up until his passing in 1982. I knew he was also involved with importing Yamaha's into the States prior to the establishment of Yamaha USA and their Grand Rapids factory (1974). I was unaware he sold Yamaha's through his factory. You mention your 631 flugel was purchased in 1977 but the serial seems significantly earlier than that. Is there a chance that your flugel was silver plated at the Schilke Factory rather than supplied like that originally. Was it NEW when you purchased it? The A in the serial number denotes it as being built/assembled at the Grand Rapids factory. Could it be a special custom order as opposed to being a stock model? I know there is a lot of mystery surrounding whether any of these "A" horns were actually assembled in the Schilke factory rather than the Grand Rapids one. What is your knowledge about these matters? Both are well and truely before my time so I rely on the experience of those who were there.

Are there any ex-Schilke employees from the late 60's early 70's lurking around who can add any details about these matters?
