I just bought a 1960 olds special on eBay for $225. It’s in good condition and I thought I was getting a deal, then I saw prices here that were lower. Did I get taken? Are older specials more desirable?

Vintage horn prices are all over the place, but condition is always an important factor. If your Special is in good playing condition, I'd say that is a good price.

To the OP: no, you didn't get taken.

Many Olds enthusiasts prefer horns made in the LA factory in the 50s but the fact is the company was still making fine instruments at the Fullerton into the mid-70s.

$225 is a good price for a 1960 Olds Special, assuming it is in good condition.

In any event you don't have to worry about getting a special mouthpiece like you do with an Olds made before 1954 because those horns had a larger than standard receiver.

I knew this was for cornets. Is it true for trumpets too? I once had a 1950ish Olds Super and used regular mouthpieces- no problem.

You may be right, SK. I've had Olds trumpets in the past but I think they were late 50s so I can't say about pre-54 trumpetss. I've definitely run into the receiver issue with pre-54 cornets.

Where did you see a price here that was lower than $225 for an Olds Special? All the Olds instruments currently for sale on this site appear to be far more expensive. I’d say you got a super deal, be happy!

The odd Olds mouthpiece size applies to their cornets only. From serial #189611 onward, Olds cornets had standard mouthpiece receivers. That equates to sometime in 1956.

If you pay less than $300 for something in good condition and isn't a student horn, it's a good deal.

So I know the special is not a student horn, but Im playing the Conn Director I got when I was a kid, from about 1967. I'm hoping the Olds Special is appreciably better. Is it?

I think most vintage horn aficionados would agree that a Special is a higher level horn than a Director. Heck, I talked with a major symphonic player in Florida (now retired) who used a Special as his primary Bb in the orchestra! Also, the multi-material bell of the later Specials makes them among the most unique and beautiful trumpets I have seen. I had several of them years back, and still miss those beautiful bells!

I've bought two from shopgoodwill.com in the last 2 or 3 years. One for $240 and the other for $228. I still have the better of the two. The Olds Special cornets go for less.

Do you mean the Conn Director? I wouldn’t pay $100 for one, unless you mean really old ones which apparently weren’t student cornets.

Honestly, if the horn plays well and is in reasonably good shape, I don’t think you got taken. Cheers!

Both were Olds Special trumpets, here, and here.

The second one had worn valves but the first is good.
