Not sure how many of you that are aware of Swedish tour-de-force pop/fusion trio Dirty Loops. If not, check them out: http://dirty-loops.com/ (I noticed they were mentioned in the "Why jazz isn't cool anymore" thread a few pages back...)

Anyway, listening to their online promo tracks inspired me to give myself the assignment of arranging, playing and recording horn parts to a couple of their songs. Not that their tracks really need any additions, it's more for the fun of it and to make myself practice more...

Tracks are here, please give them a listen:

Circus (Britney Spears cover)

Hot In Herre (Nelly cover)

Update 05/15: Added one more... Baby (Justin Bieber cover)

Update 05/25: Another one... Rolling In The Deep (Adele cover)

Update 06/15: Last one for now: Dirrty (Christina Aguilera cover)

Update 08/31: OK, so now I'm back: Sexy Back (Justin Timberlake cover)

Update 02/15 2013: Just Dance (Lady Gaga cover)

Cheers,
Per

Wow! Nice job. Love the Dirty Loops. Never ever thought I could say a Justin Beiber tune could be awesome, but their version of Baby, Baby, Baby is amazing. Your horn arranging chops are pretty damn good also! Did you record all the parts yourself or are there a few players? Great job!

Thanks for listening and your kind comments! Yeah, I played all the parts myself, the recording was done in my practice room and I did get a pretty good workout

Great job on both the writing and playing! You should send those recordings to the bands management, maybe you'll get some work out of it in the future. I am also surprised how well you were able to make the horns sit in the mix. That was fun to listen to, thanks.

Outstanding job, Per! Great playing & writing . . . I've only recently gotten into this whole "laying down horn tracks at home" thing, but these two tracks have really shown that I have a whole lot to learn [huge understatement] . . . and now you are now one of my top teachers! Thanks for all that hard work and for posting it for us to hear. Excellent work, man!

That was something I also meant to respond to. They do not sound like an after the fact overdub done by someone else. It sounds like they were intentionally done during the recording and mixing of the original tracks. What is your recording setup like? Machines, programs, mics, etc. The sound is really very-good!

A well-written, well-performed arrangement will take care of most of that IMO. Besides that, I tried to use compression and stereo panning wisely, where to place each part etc. I also used different horns and mouthpieces for the different parts, which I think made for a little bit more organic section sound.

I use a Røde NT-1000 large membrane condenser mic - probably one of the more affordable non-China mics - through a Apogee Duet interface. By trial and error I've learned how to use it in my less than perfect "studio". Software is Apple's Logic Pro on a 2010 iMac.

Again, thanks for listening!

Nice job. A bit on Jerry Hey influence here and there? And Dirty Loops have a Jamiroquai vibe on this one. Made for each other. I think the horns work much better on Circus, BTW. Actually, I dug it enough to listen to it again. Good writing and playing. Thanks for sharing!

I would hope so... I'll take that as a major compliment!
