Recently fell in love with an Olds 3 mouthpiece I got off eBay. I works great for me, better than any mouthpiece has before but it has one drawback; It’s VERY bright. I love the mouth feel, as it’s got a small inside diameter and an almost flat rim. I was hoping you all would be able to find a mouthpiece with a similar feel, but a deeper cup.

Appreciate any help I can get!

I did a quick google search on the Olds 3 specs and got a lot of hits back, including some threads here. I had a bandmate who played on an Olds 3--he said after trying others he kept coming back to it.

That said, it looks like the size is 16.5 which puts it in Bach 5c, 3c range. For me darker usually comes from deeper mouthpiece, so I would try a whole bunch of mouthpieces that trend towards flat (Yamaha, Schilke, Wick) in their middle-of-the-road diameter but with deeper cups (the V-shaped mouthpiece idea is a good one too).

I'm now playing on a Kanstul Monette copy that is 16.8 in their deep cup and it does sound deeper to me. I also found on cornet that the stock vintage mouthpieces sounded trumpet-y to me, but going with a Wick, Yamaha e cup, or Bach B gave a deeper sound. Just some ideas to get started.

You might try the Curry BC series or the Stork Vacchiano mouthpieces. Just remember there is a trade off with deeper!

Yeah, I was a little worried about the trade off, but in my experience so far, I'm not playing anything above high C in ensemble stuff, so I'm okay if anything higher than that is super bright.

It's strange, but a lot of info I've found on the specs of the Olds 3 compared to the Bach 3C is that everyone says they're very similar. But my Olds 3 and my Bach 3C are nothing alike! I wonder if maybe I just have weird ones and mine are off?

Since you obviously like the Olds 3 rim and since you can still find Olds 3 mouthpieces on eBay and elsewhere, why not buy an old Olds 3, send it to a mouthpiece specialist, and have the specialist deepen the cup and re-plate it?

That route would probably give you far more predicable results for far less money than going on a mouthpiece safari with modern manufacturers.

I've thought about it, and it's more and more starting to sound like the best option. Do you happen to know who could do that, and for how much? Mouthpiece alteration is just something I hadn't considered until recently.

I would email Mark Curry at currympc.com or message him via Trumpet Herald. He has advertised that if you like the feel of a certain mouthpiece, but it is a little too small or a large, that he can make a copy and adjust it a little one way or the other to better fit you. His mouthpiece prices are really reasonable compared with a lot of others, which makes this more doable even if your budget is tight.
