I'm looking around for some solo comtemporary pieces for piccolo trumpet, or mixed instrumentation ( ie: piccolo trumpet and large trumpet, or flugelhorn) that are not in Baroque style, but not too difficult for a recital. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Semaine Sainte a Cuzco by Tomasi might be worth looking at.

Avatar is a terrific piece...Don't know who else might have recorded it, but it is on Ray Mase's album "Trumpet in Our Time":

It can be purchased here:

Similar to Avatar is a piece titled "Sound-Piece for Trumpet, Flugelhorn, Piccolo Trumpet and Piano" by Persis Parshall Vehar. It was written for my friend David Kuehn and recorded on his 1999 album called "Musical Landscapes for Trumpet":

http://www.amazon.com/Musical-Landscapes-Trumpet-Francaix-Vehar/dp/B00002S7D3

I couldn't find the sheet music anywhere, but here's a link to the composer's website:

Best of luck!

There's a piece by Kazmierz Machala called "Sunset Rag", copyrighted by Capo Tasto Music that is for Bb trumpet, changing to Bb piccolo. Piece is only two pages and instrumentation is probably for brass quintet. We tried it in our brass choir, noone brought a pic. and the piece quickly made its way to the 'forget it' folder! I never tried it on my pic because At the time, I found the rhythms to be the biggest stumbling block.

Thanks, all! I'm aware of The Avatar (Ray Mase Recording) and thought about that piece after I posted on here. Yeah, music...I'll check out Steve's site.
In the meantime, I'll also look into the music for the Tomasi. It sounds familiar. Thanks!

Hoquetus Petrus by Harrison Birtwistle. This is for two flutes and piccolo trumpet. Very fun piece to work on and not too hard on the chops. It's harder in terms of ensemble than sheer difficulty.

Try "Escapade" by Joseph Turrin, written for Phil Smith. Nice recital opener, or to start the second half, but it does have more than a few high F's on the Bb picc!
