Does anyone know a way to get the retaining washer out, without having the tool? I've viewed the video on YouTube....
Thanks

I have used pick tools like these:

but those little clips can go flying and never be seen again.

Do the removal of a circlip placing the assembly inside of a plastic bag and making sure there are no holes in the bag. The bag will catch the circlip as it flies off.

Ah, the best tool for circlips is a circlip tool... (sorry for being a Smart-***)

something like this:

will get you off the hook.

Go to the hardware store and buy a pair of tweezers that look like they're close. If you don't have one, also get a very small file. File the tips of the tweezers into needlepoints.

This is what I did, and I've never had the clip fly away from me.

I bought a snap-ring tool to work on one of my circular saws, and I used that.... Now I have an Amado retaining clip somewhere in my living room, and a bent up paper clip holding the spitvalve together.

This is what I do, while using snap ring pliers.

I just now removed the "C RING" from an old Getzen junker cornet.

I made a mini removal tool buy using a trumpet valve spring.

The thicker the spring, the better....although I'm sure a paper clip (possibly filed down) would work too.i

You cut a portion of the valve spring and reshape into a horse shoe kind of shape. A V shape would be okay too.

It was pretty easy and nothing went flying anywhere.

It just takes a few minutes. I SHOULD do a demo video and post it on youtube.

Last year, I was looking for replacement rings for my Getzen Eterna Flugelhorn.

The links in that thread appear to be out-of-date. Here are updated links on what I purchased.

Not a great solution, but I've used 2 darts (metal tipped throwing darts).
One on each side of the C, carefully squeeze the clip and pull it out.. done on a towel or other area that will make it easy to find the spring clip if it springs free.

Ideally a spring clip plier.

Flip Oakes has a great Youtube video on Amado water key upkeep. In it, he shows his method for taking apart and cleaning. No special tools required.

Here's a simple little video I made showing how to maintain, and repair a frozen Amado water key.
