So how do you crazy kids swab out your Flugels?? Is there a device that goes down the bell flare that will reach around to the valve block?? Trying to figure out how to get down by the main water key curve. _________________ MH |

I use the Blow Dry Brass thingys that you blow through the horn. I also swab the leadpipe after use. Seems to work well.

Before swabbing, let a large amount of warm water run from the bell out through the leadpipe. This will help to take care of saliva, food particles and any other wall-adhering debris. |

Swab, snake, or H.W. Brass-Savers brushes/soft snakes. _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

This is similar to what I do on my main horns.
Every day, I swab the lead pipe. And once a week I run a spit ball through the horn a couple times, and also wipe down the valves and valve casings with a microfiber cloth.
Very little dirt gets in the horn, if you keep the lead pipe and valves clean. But when I need to swab out the entire horn, I use an HW Brass-Saver snake.

Thanks for the tips! I picked up a brass saver swab and the Blow dry rig looks interesting too... I'll grab one of those this week. _________________ MH |

I bought a snake for a trombone. It reaches to the valve block.
Tip: for anyone else who uses a Saturn water key (I had one added to my Kanstul 1525 to replace the Amado), snaking the flugel will not remove the film that builds up. I discovered I still have to disassemble the Saturn (easy) periodically. _________________ Matt Finley
