I have been frustrated with my current mute bag and would like to create my own custom case. But I would like to make it to hold what I might need in most gigs. So I thought I would ask the members what mutes they regularly carry.

What is in your mute bag?

1. Straight mute. How many?
2. Cup mute? How many?
3. Bucket? More than one?
4. Plunger? More than one?
5. Other mutes?
6. Trumpet stand? More than one? Mfgr?
7. Flugelhorn mutes? Stand(s)?
8. Music?
9. Other?

For my mute bag on my Torpedo:
1.) Brass-Bottom Tom Crown Straight Mute
2.) Red and White Stone Line Cup Mute
3.) Aluminum Harmon Brand Harmon Mute
4.) Rubber Sink Plunger from Menard's
5.) Copper Jo-Ral Bubble Mute

I have a couple more straight mutes at home I take for certain occasions.

I find this covers 80%+ of what I need. I could probably use a Bucket Mute (most likely a Soulo) and a Solotone mute for musicals in the near future.

I used a Piccolo straight mute once. That's it.

Normally, I have a straight, cup, harmon, plunger, and Crown Royal bag in my case, along with a trumpet stand. If I'm doing a big band gig, I add a bucket and cleartone and a flugelhorn stand.

I have the new protec m404 mute bag loaded with straight, cup, Harmon, pixie and plunger, plus a mute rack and stand light. Technically the last two could be removed and the slots used for other mutes such as bucket or whisper. Highly recommend the bag.

I only play small group jazz and I carry a jo-ral copper bubble mute and a Denis Wick adjustable cup mute in my horn case. They fit in there so that I don't have to have a separate mute bag and between those two mutes, I get a lot of different options for style and color of tone and buzz.

I certainly can agree with this point. Especially since the bolt-on mute bag for my Coyote 2.5 is somewhat "space-challenged". I have to make decisions for various groups on what to put inside when I am using that. Most of the time when I do, I'm going to orchestra though I usually just bring one or two bell stands and a straight. Sometimes two straights, depending upon what is being played.

For a wind ensemble type group or something jazz oriented I usually bring a H&B cup, a trumcor copper-bottom straight, my ancient Harmon branded harmon, a plunger and a crown royal bag.

I also have a Joral bubble which I usually don't carry with me due to the size of it. I have several other straight and cup mutes with unique sounds depending upon what is needed. I normally don't carry any of these unless I know I'm going to need them.

I also have two Neo-Mute sets ( http://mutesandmore.com/neo.html), one for cornet or trumpet, and one custom-made to fit my flugel. They can be quite handy on occasion though, especially when you want a really soft sound without changing the tone or intonation. They're also very small and compact, so can be added into just about any case if I have a need for them.

I don't have any mutes other than the Neo for my flugel, and when I go to brass band that's all I've been playing for the last several seasons, so I don't have to bring any mutes with me which is a blessing.

On the rare occasion when I need a lot of mutes and/or stands and they won't fit in whatever case I'm bringing along, I use the side-mounted mute bag off an old Protec triple case. It's the only part of that case I use. I never trusted the case itself for anything. Too much like a big, bulky dent bag. Disaster waiting to happen.

This is similar to what I carry in my mute bag - straight, cup, harmon, plunger, and if I think I'll need it, a Soulo bucket mute.

I hesitate to answer because I just play concert band stuff but I bring a straight, adjustable cup, and bubble "Harmon", all Humes and Berg, with a (discontinued) Jo-Ral three-mute holder. Based on the needs of the music, I then leave home whatever I'm not going to use.

I purposely got an old-fashioned case like we all had in school 35 years ago so they're easy to carry.

I was surprised that I actually had a use for a plunger last spring (though we cut that piece because it sucked so bad).

In my mute bag (a fairly large leather camera bag) for big band:
2 Straight - Shastock, Tom Crown Gemini
2 Cup - H&B Stonelined, Dennis Wick Adjustable
Harmon - JoRal Copper Bubble
Bucket - H&B Stonelined
Plunger - Ace Hardware (powder blue)
Pixie - H&B metal
Solotone - Shastock
Infant's Hat - Crown Royal equivalent
K&M trumpet and Flugel stands
Mighty Bright Encore LED Music Light
Jo-Ral mute holder

Usually left home:
Straight - H&B Stonelined, Tom Crown Copper Bottom and Tom Crown Brass Bottom
Cup - Tom Crown Aluminum
Soulo - I like this one but I carry the H&B Bucket to match the section
Practice - Trumcor
Derby - Elton Aluminum

I carry what I need. If for some reason I don't know what I'm going to need I might bring cup, straight, and Harmon, and possibly a quiet straight mute and/or a plunger which I can usually jam in somewhere. Bucket and solotone stay on the shelf unless I know I need them. When I can't jam them in a case, I often use a 4-bottle canvas wine bag -- it keeps things from rattling around too much and it seems eminently appropriate.

Straight: Tom Crown aluminum
Cup: 1940s Shastock Tonalcolor
Harmon: Jo-Ral aluminum
Plunger
Crown Royal Bag
Trumpet stand(s)
Jo-Ral three mute holder (Thanks Tom!)
Stand Light(s)
Trumpet mic and cable

Rarely do I need more than one of the same type of mute, but it happens. All of the above generally fits in my trumpet case, but I also use an old duffel bag on occasion.

Mutes in reserve depending on need:

Straight: Tom Crown copper bottom, Alessi-Vacchiano, Ray Robinson, Denis Wick
Cup: H&B (x2 with corks filed for different horns), Denis Wick
Harmon: Charles Davis copper, old Harmon brand copper
Solotone: H&B Cleartone
Bucket: Jo-Ral brass bottom
Pixie: H&B

Come to think of it, it might be time for me to find a better way of transporting my mutes. Seems like more scratches and dents are appearing weekly/monthly.

That's a good idea. I wonder if it would stretch far enough to hold a cup mute or harmon mute.

I play with a horn section that's in a few different rock/soul/jazz combos, and for that section, I bring an old Harmon (with plunger) that I use on one tune, and a blue rubber plumber's plunger for possibly use in blues solos. Together with a stand, these mutes fit in my case without needed a separate mute bag.

For concert band, I get out the mute bag (a re-purposed Black & Decker toolbag). I add a Tom Crown straight and a Denis Wick cup, and replace the Harmon with a Jo-Ral bubble. At the section leader or director's request, I'll substituted a Vacciano straight or a Stonelined cup. For big band or pit orchestra, add a black tuque (Crown Royal alternative), H&B derby, H&B bucket.

I've been interested in Facets for a while, but have not actually gone shopping yet. I should have a Shastock/SoloTone/ClearTone of some kind, but I don't.
