Well;As most of us know, its apples and oranges..I`v had the good fortune to play with some of the best lead players in the world, and also sit in a section with some of the best chamber/orchestra players, and a great player is a great player.I think at the highest levels, both styles of playing is just astounding, and there should be zero tolerance for any kind of snob crap
It doesn't have to be that way. Good playing is good playing. _________________ Either is fine. My chops always feel great

Don't you really mean as long as it fits your definition of good playing?

Well, I've got to confess that I played the lead part on this in the middle, with the lyre and my feet not together. I can say that I really was honored to play one of the parts that was written for us........AS WRITTEN. It was an amazing experience to play for 70,000 people to include the Giants and the Broncos and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra (yes Wynton played with the band about 30 feet from us). We sound checked it about 5 times in the morning and there was alot of delay and noise which provided an nice challenge to overcome. Yes it would have been great to have had it memorized but seeing as we got the call 2 days before the performance, lyres were the most sensible option given the fact that we had other jobs in those two days as well. We did discuss "feet together or feet apart" and seeing as I had written notes 4 ledger lines and above, it made sense to be as relaxed as possible. So, as for me, it was "feet apart." I always enjoy the positive comments on these forums. positivity breeds positivity.

I was wondering about that; I noticed the players in both clips were reading from printed music. Two days notice... that must've been something!
Thanks for sharing the background. Nice playing! _________________ Bb Yamaha Xeno 8335IIS

Yes it was something and as always, there was more to the story. .....I wanted to add that if you listen close to the end of it, there is a triplet lead in played by the drummer of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. That was the drum set up for the coolest version of America you ever heard in your life. Wynton Marsalis arranged it for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra (Wynton, Ryan Kisor, James Zollar, Marcus Printup and the rest of the band performed it right after we did our part about 15 yards from us on a portable stage). Too bad it isn't on the video here. If it was, it might make more sense as a complete performance to hear those two selections being played together back to back.
Oh also since you mention the lyres, when we perform this with the entire marching band we all use lyres because the Anthem usually falls into a sequence of "honors" where we are required to play other music as well including some marches. I've been "in" long enough that I have not only all three parts of the Navy version of the Anthem memorized but all three parts to a whole bunch of marches as well. I don't mean to sound like "wow I can play all these marches from memory, arent I awesome" but its just that after playing Bravura (which works great as a dixie tune) or Washington Post (which works great in a Herb Alpert style) for the umpteen thousandth time, they have a way of jamming themselves into your brain. As far as the short notice goes, I was thrilled to do it and I love a challenge so when I got the parts 2 days before the performance and looked at them I thought that it was going to be a challenge given the circumstances, the music and the company we were in.
Check this version out. This was recorded at the Dallas Cowboys game a couple of weeks ago. _________________ Jim New S5 M and MS with C Backbore

I know you have a rather restrained sense of humor, so I'll remind you:

Hey, you don't have to confess to anything. That was some top notch playing by all 3.
I recall from USMC band that I had the entire pouch of marches memorized, yet we all had to have a lyre and music folder up for uniformity . . .
Anyway, great job again. You should be proud of that performance. _________________ Crazy Nate - Fine Yet Mellow Fellow

I was almost in front of you (27 rows up) and you guys sounded fantastic.
This is pretty good for college kids. A little too much polka style on the dotted 8ths at times and I don't understand why they think they need to pause for so long but all in all it is the best one that has been posted so far.
For one thing; the whole tune is played with control, not blatted. _________________ Either is fine. My chops always feel great
