I have a 634 which looks EXACTLY like the 635 on the previous page. The claim on another TH thread is that the 634 also has an ML bore and a 5 in bell, like polhorn stated for his 635. Could it be that the 634 and 635 differ in their bell shape or leadpipe taper?

The slides on my 634 are stuck and I need to have it cleaned so I cannot comment on the bore right now.

Interesting that the horn listed by polhorn is serial number 09422 and the one listed in the original posts from 10 years ago is 09425. That makes me think there were not many made.

Those old Yamahas are still good value horns. I have a 636 that is in kind of rough shape but plays well.

Yeah, I need to look up the serial on my 634, could be in the same range. And yes, those are interesting horns. I still need to get to know mine better, somehow it plays a LOT different than my Bach. I was recently tempted by a 636 and a 732 that showed up shortly after one another - would have been very interesting to compare the three, but was too slow, so someone else got a great deal on the 636 and a pretty good deal on the 732.

Anyway, back to the original question: does anyone know for sure what the diff between the 635 and the other three-digit horns is?

Years ago I collected the info from Yamaha about their older models from their website and made a chart of my own comparing them to Schilke models based on bore size.

I didn't see anything about a model 635 back then. Is there a missing Schilke model that the 635 could have been based on?

Also note differences like between the Yamaha 632 and 636. They are both M bores but the 632 is red brass while the 636 is yellow. Also, the 632 started earlier. The 632 and 636 might have both been available in 1976 or the 632 might have ended when the 636 was released. The 634 and 637 overlapped for a couple of years.

I always thought of the 7 series to be just silver plated versions of the 6 series but the specs for the 732 say yellow brass instead of red. It is possible that the Yamaha website listed yellow for the 732 incorrectly since there is appears to be no difference in stated specs for the 732 and 736 but they were both apparently produced in 1976-1978.
