Hello all,
Pretty high energy arrangement for brass band! Amazing that those cornetist are playing on the vee cupped mouthpieces and still getting that sound. Nice sounding soloists. _________________ Christian K. Peters

I about did that in jazz band the other day.. We were rehearsing a song and the last note was a G above the staff... I squealed something that I think was a triple G, I don't know what it was, but I nearly messed myself. _________________ Proverbs 15:1

Very nice arrangement of a tune that most trumpeters associate with Maynard. I have had the chance to hear Jimmy Webb perform this piece. He tours and does one man shows singing all the hits he wrote. He has great stories about the artists who recorded his work. His Richard Harris stories are priceless, they became good friends after recording Mac Park. Jimmy is also a really nice guy who loves to talk to the crowd after a show. |

I originally heard Maynard play this tune, and he has left a soft spot for this song in me, but I really like this arrangement. Jimmy Webb put quite a bit of emotion in his version. I like that. _________________ Proverbs 15:1

I thought it was real good. But I might have been tempted to call the vibrato police if I was there. |

Pretty ballsy to talk smack when you post your website in your sig and are apparently an aspiring musician. What you would say to a friend in person might not be the best idea to post on the internet with your name attached. _________________ Bb - Bach 37 #0XXX

Hello all,
I thought this performance was a great interpretation of a Maynard tune by a British Brass Band. The vibrato is traditional to the type of training brass banders would get in growing up in the tradition. _________________ Christian K. Peters

I grew up with Maynard's version which defined the tune for me. I had passing appreciation at the time for the original and the disco version but both paled in comparison. Though I like the version plenty I can appreciate that some might not be moved buy a BBB version. For some I'm sure it's like listening to "Smoke on the Water" performed by an orchestra. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Well, they are currently ranked 10th in the World, so probably too high a standard for you to get a seat on the front row. Judging by your web page you have not played in a Brass Band, so may even struggle to get a seat on third, at this level.
I won't comment on this performance, as I hate this tune with a passion and always have done, so no one could perform it well enough. _________________ "Nearly as good as I need to be. Not nearly as good as I want to be".

Just wanted to add I don't really care for the tune, never have. Have heard Maynard's version too many times and can't listen to it anymore. But still, if one cannot appreciate these people's efforts, and like it because of that, well I think the 'problem' is on them. (Maybe if people, every once and a while, actually stepped out of their little comfort zones, they might experience something new and pleasurable.) _________________ Dave M

Very true about comfort zones. I played a few particular pieces featuring cornet to someone who is steeped in drum corp and she was floored at a type of beauty and lyricism that she rarely hears on a trumpet. In my mind this doesn't in any way detract from all that is great about the trumpet but it is a very different thing altogether and really can't be compared. There's nothing wrong with preferring "Open Up Wide" on trumpet and "Danny Boy" on cornet. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."
