I want to buy a 1950s KING Super 20 Symphony trumpet (with brass bell, not sterling silver model) in excellent condition from someone and need advice on what to offer. Can some of you who regularly follow eBay help me out. I want to be fair in my offer. Thanks. _________________ C. G. Conn 60B Super Connstellation

I'd first ask the seller what they're asking for the horn, then counter with something $50 to $100 less. I wouldn't go over $300 for the horn unless it was in exceptional condition and played very, very well. Most horns from that era will need some attention, including an ultra clean and maybe a precision valve alignment. If it's been played much over the years it may well need new valves as well. _________________ Jim Hatfield

This KING Super 20 has not been played much at all. It's almost like brand new. The case is in perfect condition as well. _________________ C. G. Conn 60B Super Connstellation

You might want to check out the used trumpets for sale by Dillon Music at http://www.dillonmusic.com/used_instruments/usedinstruments.asp?instrument=Used%20Bb%20Trumpets&StartPos=100
Among the 159 horns listed are several King Super 20s. Dillon is asking $695 for one, somewhat less for the other. My $300 might be a little low for the horn you're looking at. On the other hand, I picked up an excellent '50s era King Master cornet with a great case for $170 on eBay.
Ultimately, it depends on how much you like the horn and how much you have to spend. If it takes $500 or $600 to get the horn and it makes you happy, it's a great deal. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Hi.
I watch eBay now and then (ahhhem) and did a quick search for you. The cornets seem to be offered around the $200 mark - not nearly so many trumpets. However, this one is from 1955 or so and has a BiN for $375: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2558409189&category=16214. It's been relacquered and has an addon saddle, so is not necessarily comparable, but you get the idea. I'd offer $325 and if you end up under $400, you've likely gotten yourself a pretty good deal. Keep in mind, that what *you're* willing to pay for it is not the same as what you can sell it for. If you want to lowball the person, start at $300. I personally wouldn't use Dillon's to compare prices to; they tend to overprice their stuff. That being said, they have good reason to - overhead and they have a ton of selection, so they know once you get in the store, you're done. Good luck and let us know how it turns out! Those old Kings are (imho) underrated and gorgeous horns!
