Pat, in the first post of the sticky thread "A Balanced Approach to Playing" you said that:

"The primary focus is first and foremost on sound and secondly on a free and energetic delivery of the air. "

I can understand that you can work on your sound awareness by listening to great players and imitating them, but how Bill Adam and his students proceed in improving the delivery of air and making it more energetic?

I was always told to "spin" the air THROUGH the horn/sound, and that the sound floated on the air/breath.

I can't think of anything Mr. Adam did specifically to directly have us work on our air. His standard approach to everything was usually...
1) Focus on sound. Listen to the right models.
2) Mr. Adam often says that 90% of trumpet playing is mental. Of the remaining 10% (physical aspects) 9% is breath and the remaining 1% covers everything else. Therefore the breath is 9 times as important as all the other physical aspects combined. Just this awareness makes a difference.
3) Adam often uses visualizations in addition to demonstration to create physical changes without getting the student's mind into dangerous analysis/paralysis.
4) The playing under water trick can be used occasionally to give a visualization of the airflow and increase awareness.
5) Focus on a full inhalation (without describing mechanics) and no hesitation before changing the direction of the air flow.
6) Keep the air in motion.
7) Adam also used some illustrations that he drew from his background in martial arts.

Other things are at least hinted at here. http://everythingtrumpet.com/Bill-Adam/articles/ClinicAddress.html

I would agree with Pat -- while occasionally Mr. Adam would talk about the inhalation, the exhalation is directed by the sound.
