Gardner is one of the underrated players, IMHO. He´s played lead for countless bands, yet doesn´t seem to get the recognition he deserves.
Does anybody know what equipment he uses? I´ve seen him with Bach trumpets on photographs, but what about the mouthpiece?

I was with a friend once who asked Earl what he was playing and he went on to say "I'm playing on a 30,000 dollar vintage blah blah blah and my mouthpiece is a classic 10,000 blah blah blah made by blah blah blah"
- He never answered the question, but went on to say he could care less about what he or anyone else played on and that it was unimportant....maybe nobody knows?

Actually, that's an interesting answer to the question that Earl gave I think. A wide-spread adoption of his attitude would eliminate about half the discussions around here.

Back in the 70's he was playing a Bach LB, Reeves MP. If I remember it was a 42 rim, maybe a shallow cup. That was back when he was "big bird!" He was here last year with Mingus Big Band, sounded wonderful. Don't think he's an equipement junkie, just a truly great player.
Earl uses a LB Bach w/25 bell.
And I just realized.....I don't think I ever asked about his mouthpiece.

When this thread started years ago Earl played a Reeves 42S with a 692 backbore,. He had done so since at least 1976. I don't know if Earl is still playing that today.
