What if I would like to sell a trumpet on this site, I don't have much else to say, or should I post items about the trumpet. I hate to part with it but I rather see some one play it.

I was told this is a good place to sell the trumpet, so I'm trying to get five posts.

The "five post" rule helps insure that it's a real person posting an ad. You might consider using those five posts to introduce yourself to the TH community, build some personal credibility, and share a bit with the community you wish to do business with.

Good point Steve.

When you put something in the Marketplace you're asking people to send you a large amount of money. Those people have to trust that you'll deliver.

The first thing I do when looking at something in the marketplace, is check the persons profile and posts. If it's a bunch of junk just to get posts to sell stuff..................I'm not buying!!

Yep . . . five posts just gets you on the dance floor sport, it doesn't mean someone will dance with you!

I'm also on a professional photography forum with a great classified forum, and I wouldn't even consider purchasing a high end lens or something else I desired from a new poster, even at a low price.

There, as here, most look for a proven interaction track record before trusting a stranger with hard-earned money for an expensive item. Its not just a question of the item arriving . . . but of the level of care it received during its time with its fellow owner.

I've turned away from many a deal due to a rookie poser just looking to dump some item that, for all I know, was stolen anyway or not properly cared for by a serious adult.

If you want a good price on your horn, and you want to gain that trust which is required to get that price . . . you better start struttin" and earning respect. Otherwise, you might be disappointed in the lack of response to your selling price anyway. Just sayin' . . .

I don't know about other folks, but...

Five post with nothing to say (other than "Gee, I need 5 posts) - the likelihood of me purchasing anything from someone like that? Zero.

On other hobby forums I've been on, that is grounds for immediate banning. Clearly stated in their terms of service, and actively moderated.

I'm not necessarily advocating that, just pointing out a practice I've seen elsewhere, and for the reasons stated above.

And it's not like you can't just sell it on ebay, if the only thing you want to do is sell a horn and not participate in any other way.

I completely agree the 5 posts is important to security for MarketPlace. You would want to purchase from a quality trusted person, as well.

Best way to put it. It shows who you are. If you're not interested in taking the time to make yourself trustworthy, then people won't buy your item. It also makes you look like you're just trying to bypass the rules just to sell it.
There are other threads that explain even more reasoning if you want to look those up.

Seriously, though...

I get WHY there is the rule, but it's dumb. Surely there has to be some sort of verification process that's better than that.

How about not letting people be anonymous on here with regards to user names, etc. I think that would go a long way...

The five posts the seller creates help to decide whether one would want to consider buying from that person.

Anonymity has been discussed endlessly and it's here to stay.

The five-post rule deters some spammers and the autobots.

Verification requires the intervention of the sysadmin, one guy supporting this site (with the help of a few moderators that do not approve users). This site does not provide a living wage for him. He does do some checks but has finite time. Most posters would not believe the amount of effort that goes on behind the scenes.
