Congrats! I'd seen one and tried it back in 1978, along with a trumpet with that trigger 3rd slide as well. Last year the old n+1 got me in a bind. Had just extended myself when one, perhaps this one, was offered. As I'm not ready-steady in a brass band I wished the seller well and hoped the lucky recipient would be good egg, then smiled at chances lost, had, and found, and pulled my offer. No regrets, and I'd be doubly pleased to hear more about what you do with your 'English' Ambassador! Way to go!

Well connicalman, let's just say that when I purchased it, I had just moved from repiano to flugel in our band, and now I'm sitting in the first chair!

(which is not all down to the cornet...)

Cheers,
Roger

Hi Connicalman,

Sorry for the delay in replying, have been away for work this week. How is it going? Very well.

I went up to Brisbane (I live in Victoria) last Easter for the National Band Championships to play, and left the horn with Better Sounds Australia for a refresh and (spot) replate.

It came back looking and playing like a new horn. The valves in particular benefitted from some new springs and felts, and an alignment.

Struggle to put pics up here, but link below is to the replated horn.

For the Aussies on the forum, can't recommend Better Sounds more highly - great to do business with, and the job is wonderful - it really does look like a new horn.

As for playing, I find it great - kind of like the perfect cross between a Yam and a Besson - all of the Yam's flexibility, with the Besson tone (perhaps a touch brighter than that), and no tuning issues.

For me, the only issues are - it's heavy, which doesn't help my tennis elbow, but gives it a rich tone, and the third slide trigger ring is too far away to be really comfortable.

Apart from that, I'd say if you get a chance to snag one, do it! Best Olds I've ever played, without a doubt (and yes I know that's a big call).

Cheers,
Roger

Did Zig Kanstul participate in development of A6T at Olds?

That's a very good question. It was one of the last horns developed by Olds, so my guess would be probably he did.

It's very much based on the Boosey & Hawkes / Besson cornet I think - maybe a slightly different bell profile.

It has that Olds very solid-feeling blow - rock solid slots.

Cheers,
Roger

Trumpetguild.org article says that
Quote:
Changes in management at Chicago Musical Instrument Company, the parent firm of Olds, resulted in Kanstul resigning his position in 1970. The Olds firm permanently ceased operations in 1979.

Ah....well, in that case, no, he didn't!

Cheers,
Roger

Old thread alert...

I've wanted one of these for years, and just when I find one I'm overloaded with cornets. I have 3 very nice Olds cornets at the moment; a great playing Olds Special (I find the cornet version of the Olds Special is special indeed), an Olds Super cornet AND a great playing Olds Recording cornet.

So, I'm quite well stocked in cornets now and what appears in TH's own Marketplace??? A very rare Olds A6 cornet. Phooey!! There is NO justice.

My advice would be - if you've got the $$$ buy it...you won't be disappointed..

Cheers,
Roger
