Lou,

It's good to hear that you have found something that really fits you well. I know from your posts that you've been through a lot recently trying to solve the puzzle.

Kudos to you for that, some of us never will get to that point.

Welcome to the club. The reason I went with the Xeno, was how easy it was to play. I know it's possible to get used to a horn's intonation, but the 8335g just made me feel like a million bucks. It also just feels like high quality in your hands.

Smoking deals on these horns right now too, as the latest and greatest Neos are finally making it to shelves.

This is very good news Louise! I remember back to another topic...

Much as I hate to say it, I would go with the Yamaha and ditch the others. Play one cornet for everything, and tell people you change horns when it's needed...

I hope the Yamaha turns out to be what you wish for in an instrument and serves you well for many years. this is the exact same model a great friend of mine uses, and used as principal trumpet of our opera orchestra for many years. It always sounds great.

Now if she'll just use a proper brass band mouthpiece she'll be sorted.

Hi Lloyd

Thank you very much.

I really hope that you and your family had a great New Year and will have a great 2014.

I realize you have made us curious as to the make/model and one day the secret may be told. Yet, it is time to put your newly-acquired cornet through the paces while comparing it to other cornets you have owned and/or played.

I'm enjoying reading your review.

Thank you very much. I've put my other cornets away for now, even my Bach 184ML, which I've played day in day out since 1995, to really get used to my new cornet. I'll post a full review in a few weeks.

Best wishes,

Lloyd

Best wishes to you too.

Hi Lou, Don't neglect to lube the slides & screw caps before you put them away. Indeed it would make sense to give them a good internal clean & dry out the bores.

Louise,

The individual variation between the instruments makes a difference too, as does the acclimatization period.

Hi etc-etc

Very true, but Yamaha are usually one of the most consistent. I wondering whether the lacquer is making much difference to the tone. Probably not. I'm playing just this cornet for now, to allow me to fully acclimatize.

Congratulations!

Thank you very much.

Hi etc-etc

Very very close, but remember that I said that it has a yellow brass bell, so yes, it is the Yamaha Xeno in lacquer, but the 8335 with the yellow brass bell.

I'm really surprised at its big full tone. I'd briefly played the Xeno before, both models in silver-plate, and felt that the tone was a bit thin on both, especially the one with the gold brass bell. Considering the consistency of Yamaha, I doubt that this one plays any differently to any other, so maybe the lacquered version, if it is even possible, responds better for me.

Maybe it was because I compared the Xenos last time to a couple of Prestiges. I remember the Xenos playing great but sounding a bit thin compared to the Prestige. My new to me Xeno doesn't however sound thin compared to my Sovereign, Bach 184ML or Imperial, as my musician husband remarked from out front.

This time however I was more interested in response and playability, after liking the sound of the Sovereign but not much else, although obviously any new cornet had to have a good tone with me on the end.

I figured that I largely sound like me on every thing, and that the audience and my band colleagues are unlikely to notice the difference in tone between a Xeno and Sovereign, but that as I am playing them, I will notice the difference in playability. The lovely big full tone of the Xeno was a bonus, as I was prepared to accept a slightly thinner tone for better playability.

Take Care

Lou

Hi

My usual custom Kanstul 3C, for now. I don't intend to experiment with mouthpieces this time, until I'm really familiar with my new to me cornet, six months at least.

Yes I am 'busting chops'.

I don't know what you mean by this to be honest.

Best to you with your choice. Hardly a bog-stomping swamp thing. CONGRATS

Thank you very much. Like you say, this is just a bog standard brass band cornet choice, but I like it very much.

Hi

I agree.

This is a friendly cornet that wants to help and co-operate, if that makes sense, rather than a beast that tries to trip you up.

I know it's possible to get used to a horn's intonation, but the 8335g just made me feel like a million bucks. It also just feels like high quality in your hands.

I'm really glad to hear how much you like your Xeno, and how it makes you feel like a player. They do appear nicely made, although not as solid maybe as the Sovereign.

Smoking deals on these horns right now too, as the latest and greatest Neos are finally making it to shelves.

Very true. Most retailers have £500 or so off, now that the Neo is out. I have no idea how the Neo compares to the Xeno. John Packers advised that players have been trying both, and most people feel that they are very similar, with the Neo having more resistance. I don't feel that the Xeno needs more resistance, so I've probably made the right choice, and the Neo was beyond my budget anyhow.

Take Care

Lou

Hi Andy

Thank you very much. Your post was definitely influential. I'd had a Maestro years ago, and had always wished that I'd kept it, and I'd wished that I had gone for the Xeno instead of the Sovereign, but your post made me decide to do something about it.

Hi Lloyd.

Thank you very much.

As I recall you have a son who one day may follow in your footsteps in becoming a musician should he show interest. One of those brass horns would be superb for him to learn to play.

He is eleven now and I don't think that he is going to show an interest in playing brass, although that is of course fine with me, as he has lots of other interests. He showed interest up to about the age of six, then it fizzled out.

I am wondering whether one of my daughters may be interested. My five year old likes singing and dancing, and there appears to be a brass group at her school, as I see older children coming out of school with cornet and trombone cases.

My eight month old has grown up with music, with me playing until 2 days before she was born (I only stopped then because I can't play at weekends where I live, and she was born on a Sunday), and her Dad's a musician also.

Whatever hobbies and interests they choose is fine with me.

Best wishes,

Lloyd

Best wishes to you too

Lou

Hi Frank

Thank you very much. I have given them a good clean, and greased everything before putting them away. I'll get them out every couple of weeks or so, and get the valves moving and check the slides.

Thanks again.
