I've just discovered the playing of John Marshall and it's knocking me out. This guy is an amazing bebopper!!! I immediately ordered 8 of his CD's and have been listening to them non-stop.

I did a search of his name on TH and got almost zero results (definitely no threads that discusses him or his playing in any kind of detail). For this reason I am assuming that many other people might not have heard of this guy either. So I am here to spread the good word

GO CHECK OUT JOHN MARSHALL! All of his albums are phenomenal!!!

Now you know!!!

Long time member of the classic era of the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. Still subs with then when he's in New York. I believe he's in Europe most of the time now.

Yeah, he sure can play.
Along with Valery Ponomarev he keeps the hard bop flame burning bright!
"Bopera House" with Tardo Hammer gets played regularly on my CD player, especially "Just One Of Those Things"

Yes, I remember when it used to be called the Metropolitan Bopera House but they had to change their name due to a petty law suit.

First time I heard John was at a club in NYC called Jays (Broadway at 96th, I believe), with the Metropolitan Bopera House and he had Andy Fusco on alto sax and Tardo Hammer on piano. For the life of me I can't remember the drums and bass, but I was completely blown away by the front line (and the pianist).

That had to be in early 1990, if memory serves.

Speaking of Bopera House, I read that they put out 3 albums. I found and purchased this one:

But I can't find the other two albums anywhere, I think the titles of the albums are:
*Bopera House - Formidable
*Bopera House - Still Comin' on Up

If anyone has a lead on how I can obtain these albums please let me know!

If it's of any help both "Formidable" and "Still Comin' On Up" are currently available on Ebay -- items 220528088447 and 320615881742 respectively.

Not surprisingly, only in vinyl -- I very much doubt they were ever issued on CD.

Sweet, thanks for the heads up! I didn't think about searching for vinyl, thats probably why I was having trouble finding them.

Heard him many times with the WDR Big Band in Germany. I thought he was a Brit, though. Good player.

This is why I check this site periodically. This is a player I'll be listening to.

Thanks!

Been around for quite a while. As some one said earlier he's been over seas. Check the big bands like Jones and Watrous.. I actually have the 3 sessions you've mentioned on CD.

Maynard fans will recognize Ferdinand Povel from the 'Live at Jimmy's' record...he does a great job on 'Getting Sentimental Over You' on that record....

John's a great player. One of my favorites. Fortunately for us his work is well recorded.

Just found out (and ordered) that "Formidable" is now available on CD -- maybe "Still Comin' On Up" will follow suit!
Can also recommend the recordings on Blue Jack Records.

yeah Johns a fine player, both as a soloist and a section player; Played with him a bunch in the late 70s early 80s before he took the gig in Germany; Always dug his lick on the turn around on "Cherry Juice" that was a Thad tune..He was really coming out of K.D. and Lee and he did his homework..I think as how the music bizz evolved after that, he made a great decision to take the radio band gig in Germany..Food and shelter ain`t a bad thing!
