I've just discovered a new way to practice the pedal routines.
Never start on a pedal tone!
For example, try SA Lesson 7, Part I.
Play as written down to Gb, then for F start an octave higher, but continue the arpeggio down to pedal F. Continue like this down to Gb again and then reset up an octave on F.
Works really well this way. Try it and see.

Play the octave above first to determine the pitch. What's new about that?

Never start on a pedal tone. Why not, if your able to do it correctly?

Nothing, but that's not what I said. Read my post and try it and see if it works for you.

I know what you mean.. that's what I do.

Additionally.. add an octave (up) once down to, say, E, or lower..(?)

And conversely, on Part 2's, start an octave lower.. where it's comfortable to do so. Although, I sometimes wonder if this is necessarily a good idea. The tendency seems to be to create an open aperture.. I guess as long as the aperture zips up on the ascent?

I've also started adding pitch bends on the long hold on Part 1. Not every time, and in both directions.. seems to help tongue level(?)

It's interesting how these variations can make a big difference.. or at the very least.. keep us focussed and less complacent.

As Claude said.. "Don't stop where I left off.. take it further"

I don't really get what you mean from just the text description... Write it out?

A cold winters day here in Melbourne, listening to some great music not trumpet but Diana Krall, love her stuff! and going back through old TH stuff to refresh and came across this post from Eric Bolvin.

i just gave it a try, and its a cool variation on the normal Systematic approach feels good and works well, as usual, EB's stuff is spot on, give it a try
cheers

Dude, sorry to hijack the thread...but I love Melbourne!! I always do well at the Crown Casino there. Once the civil war starts here in the States, Melbourne is on the top of my list of cities to move to!!

EB- as you've stated, Gordon does the same after the first lesson. You can also do the BIM version of Stamp WarmUps, essentially the same once one gets down below F#'. Neat thing about the Stamp book is there is a play-along CD done by T Stevens that moves you ahead and gives those with less than perfect pitch something to target. Good luck.
