Hey everyone,
Looking to replace some outdated and extremely decrepit trumpet stands...I need something as strong as possible and able to be thrown into trunks without major incidents. Any ideas? |

Hercules and the old classic Hamilton are 2 pretty strong stands. The old hamilton is under 20 dollars in most places.

K&M stands don't have to survive in the trunk if you store them in the bell. Hamilton stands are pretty tough but if they take damage it's likely only the rubber parts which in theory can be replaced. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

Even if you do throw them in the trunk, with the legs stowed it's hard to imagine them suffering too badly. _________________ Richard Sandals

If a K&M stand can cope with our stage crew, it will most likely survive in your trunk too...

I suppose I might be concerned that the plastic could take damage and that in turn could scratch the horn. Otherwise you're right, it'll be pretty hard to break. The newer ones have a rubber stopper at the tip that might be more susceptible to damaged. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

+1 for K&M
if you want you can also put a legging or nylon over the stand to prevent scratches if your worried about it _________________ www.tsargentmusic.com |

I've used my K&M stand as a bell mandrel a few times when I was in a hurry and needed to straighten a bell: It will survive żour bag. |

Thanks for the responses. I've dealt plenty with the K&M (I use one currently) and hate the old hamilton stands (dealt plenty with them too).
I won't be putting any of these in my case/bag...but in a trunk (stage hands likely will be literally tossing them in). Does this change your opinions?
Thanks. |

Employ stagehands that respect equipment?
Instrument stands don't need to be babied, but a modicum of sensible handling will mean no damage. If they can't be bothered doing that, find someone who is. (and put it in the contract. Even put a you break through rough handling, you pay clause)
cheers

How do they handle microphones? Treat trumpet stands the same way! _________________ Veteran comebacker!

I recommend the K&M stand. I used to use a Ultimate Stands Jamstand. But it was a pain to carry around. It was sturdy, though.

I've settled on the Hercules Trav-L-light stands. They can completely safely travel in the bell of my trumpet, so no stage hands, roadies, goons, gibbons or godzillas ever have any access to them. I really don't let anybody handle my Walt Johnson trumpet-flugelhorn-mutes case but me. Less heartache. |

This does not address your question, but personally, anything that I own, I carry. That includes everything horn-related, stands included.
And to be fair to equipment guys, at sometimes 1:30 or 2 o'clock in the morning, they want to get packed and outta there as much as I do. No, that does not excuse abusing equipment, but the reality is what it is.
Which is why I take care of all my own stuff.

Carrying K&M in the bell can result in a distorted bell if the case hits the floor or the door. |

I own both the K&M and the Hercules. The K&M is lighter and fits in the bell, but can be easily damaged if someone accidentally steps on it. Also, the horn is very low on the floor, and if someone steps on the stand with the horn on, he will almost certainly damage the bell. My K&M was damaged this way, but luckily the horn was not there... It would be fantastic to live in a world where your horn is absolutely safe on stage, but unfortunately the real world does not work this way!
The Hercules is made of metal, is heavier and does not fit in the bell, but it is sturdy, and keeps the horn higher from the ground, so even if someone accidentally hit the stand, there is good chance that he would not hit the horn. Some people are concerned that it is more likely to tilt and fall, but IMHO this is very unlikely. Another plus of the hercules is that you can use clip on microphones and you don't have to remove them to put the horn on the stand.
I have the single Hercules stand, but they also make models that can hold more than one horn. _________________ "Don't play like a trumpeter, play like a singer!" Andrea Giuffredi

My left hand. It eliminates the need for a stand, minimizes the opportunity for accidents, matches what I'm wearing ..... |
