I thought it would be interesting to look at symphony trumpet sections that have been together (no personnel changes) for MANY seasons. I came up with 8 sections that have been together for 13 or more seasons! That’s very impressive.
This is just a starting point for this topic. I’m sure there are lots of sections that I’ve missed, simply because I don’t have full section details on any other groups. I’m very interested to see how this develops!
If anyone knows the actual date when Donald Reinberg retired from the San Francisco Symphony then I can update the number of seasons for the first group on this list.
San Francisco Symphony
1980-1999? (19 Seasons)
Glenn Fischthal
Laurie McGaw (at least until 1995)
Chris Bogios
Donald Reinberg (at least until 1995, possibly until 1999 when Mark Inouye joined the section)
New York Philharmonic
1948-1962 (15 Seasons)
William Vacchiano
Nat Prager
John Ware
Jimmy Smith
Cleveland Orchestra
1973-1988 (15 Seasons)
Bernard Adelstein
David Zauder
Charles Couch
James Darling
BBC Symphony Orchestra
1930-1945 (15 Seasons)
Ernest Hall
Eric Pritchard
Jack Mackintosh
Bertie Barr
Horrace Hamilton
(with William Overton beginning in 1935)
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
1979-1993 (14 Seasons)
Adolph Herseth
George Vosburgh
William Scarlett
Timothy Kent
Detroit Symphony Orchestra
1992-Current (14 Seasons)
Ramon Parcells
Kevin Good
Stephen Anderson
William Lucas
BBC Symphony Orchestra
1992-Current (14 Seasons)
Bill Houghton
Gareth Bimson
Andre Hendie
Paul Cosh
Martin Hurrell
Cleveland Orchestra
1935-1948 (13 Seasons)
Louis Davidson
A. Hruby
W. Hruby

With some help from Wilmer:
The Philadelphia Orchestra
1946-1958 (12 Seasons)
Samuel Krauss
Sigmund Hering (to 4th trumpet in 1952)
Harold Rehrig
Seymore Rosenfeld (to 2nd trumpet in 1952)
In looking at the Philadelphia list in more detail I think this "trio" should be mentioned as well:
The Philadelphia Orchestra
1925-1945 (20 Seasons)
Saul Caston
Sigmund Hering
Harold Rehrig
And the following 4th trumpet players:
Rudolph Engel (1925-1931)
Melvin Headman (1931-1943)
Samuel Krauss (1943-1945)
Los Angeles Philharmonic
1982-1999 (17 Seasons)
Thomas Stevens
Rob Roy McGregor
Donald Green
Boyde Hood
Boston Symphony Orchestra
1935-1947 (12 Seasons)
George Mager
Marcell Lafosse
Roger Voisin
Rene Voisin
Boston Symphony Orchestra
1957-1973 (16 Seasons)
Roger Voisin (to 3rd Trumpet 1965)
Andre Come
Armando Ghitalla (to 1st Trumpet 1965)
Gerard Goguen
And input from Abbedd at TM:
New York Philharmonic
1934-1942 (8 Seasons)
Harry Glantz
Nat Prager
William Vacchiano
NBC Symphony Orchestra
1946-1954 (8 Seasons)
Harry Glantz
Frank Falcone
Ray Crisara
(Glantz and Falcone from 1942).
From 1946 till its disbandment in 1954, NBC had only 2 changes in the entire brass section. Replacing a Tuba and an assistant horn. And it sounds it too. You should hear the 1952 Till _________________ Derek Reaban

Baltimore Symphony 1982-2000
Don Tison, principal
Langston Fitzgerald III
Ed Hoffman, assistant
Gail Hutchens
I might be a year off on the 1982 (could be 83), but I will assume 82 because Hoffman replaced Rob Roy McGregor, whom you have listed in the LA Phil section beginning 1982. Not a single change for 18 years but three changes in the last five years! |

Derek:
I think this proves you're even more of a nut about this stuff than I am. Thanks for your efforts.
Larry Malin
PS: Do you have any idea how long the Chicago Symphony trumpet section that posed for the Farkas book stayed together? |

Larry,
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
1958-1964 (6 Seasons)
Adolph Herseth
Vincent Cichowicz
Frank Kaderabek
Rudolph Nashan
Yeah. I guess I just really enjoy the history aspect to this topic. There’s a nice ITG Journal Article entitled Chicago Symphony Orchestra Trumpet Sections 1948 – Present where I pulled the information on the CSO for this slant on this topic.
I remember when I was a kid and I first found the Farkas book. I’ll bet I stared at those pictures for hundreds of hours (I had them on my stand “looking back at me” while I was practicing). I remember meeting Vincent Cichowicz in the early 1990s and thinking to myself, “hey, you look different than in your picture!”. _________________ Derek Reaban
