I have been waiting for someone to say that, if the plate seems loose, it's time to get it re-fitted. I have uppers since 1974 and still play, in all this years only once did I need to have them re-fitted and I have never used any powder or paste to hold them in place. A proper fit is what makes them feel very close to real. Don't except any less. A good fit is the second most important thing, being clean is first. Good Luck _________________ Mike |

Thank You for your inspiring post. I needed to hear that. I know its early
for me but this waiting heal time is depressing and I'm thinking more than
I should. Maybe I'm getting excited about playing soon and want to push
it a bit. Your posture about this denture thing is great and inspiring and I
hope my outcome will be the same. Playing in a band is great fun, but
playing 24 notes of Taps is so important in not just playing those notes
but the tone of your notes brings the one with the horn effect that so
many see as feeling. I do not want to loose that. The denture placement
you described is what I hope to get. I'm playing and resting as I go and
everyday day is getting better. I can't wait till I get my finished denture
and be whole again. Thanks Again for your Support. Fred |

Fred; One more thing thats very important..They call it the jet..The jet is the distance between the back of the top teeth and the front of the bottoms.if that spread is too large, its not right to resist the air stream. The teeth have to click together when your bottom jaw is jutted forward..This makes a huge difference, which I found out thru trial and error when I first had a bridge made. |

My dentist and lab tech's admitted I'm the first brass player they have
dealt with. I think they would be happy if I were the last.
It is because of this group that I feel I'm not alone. This does mean a lot.
Information I get here will be talked about before final denture, in hopes
they will better understand our importance to detail. I understand that I will
make the ultimate difference and it will not come by just chance.
I do know the difference between what I can change and not change.
Musicians are a breed in itself, in that we will not give up something we
love doing. As you can see I have a lot of time on my hands.
Thanks Again Fred |

Your comeback trail is your journey to getting there. Having the opportunity
to do it all over again is a blessing.
Just think, you are now your own teacher. Isn't it great. We can now go
on the internet and get all the info and help we will ever need.
I've been blessed with having good friends and teachers in my life-time.
I believe winning horses run with winning horses.
I would have never been at this site if it were not for my teeth. I was looking for info and advice. I could not find anyone who knew anyone who
wore dentures and plays. When I come upon problems I haven't had, I'm
assured that there is help out there, you just need to hold your hand out
there. Well its practice time I'll have to BUZZ-AWAY. Fred |

All I can say is that I used to play in a big band where the lead player had full dentures. You could not tell that he did. Therefore it must be possible! _________________ Bb - Scherzer 8218W, Schilke S22, Bach 43, Selmer 19A Balanced

Thank You for your post. I'm still using my temp plate while gums are
healing. I hope to play well again in six months. Later I'll have my lowers
done, and the whole procedure will begin again.
I could have had all of them done at once, but I elected to do the tops
first. To do both I think , would be to much for the lab tech and dentist
to grasp since I had all I could do to explain the brass players needs.
I hope to have more updated news and the upcoming treatments.
Thank You You've been great. Fred

I'm practicing and playing more. My temp denture is better than nothing
and not playing at all. Six months seems like forever, but I'm thankful
for what I have. For those who are following these posts bear in mind I'm
my worst enemy.
I see that I'm making progress, slow but moving forward. Everyday I get
more excited. I can't believe I love playing more than I ever had.
There are more stones that I haven't turned over, and I am enlightened
to find out. Thanks for all support and look forward to others going
through dental procedures and posts. Fred |

Just an update on my progress. It's only getting better as far as my gums
healing go. I'm looking forward to my finished denture later on. My
practicing is about the same, getting about an hour in every day.
Because I'm using denture adhesive and have no back teeth I have to
use a lot of it, so it stays in place while I'm playing. I will not need to do
it later when total replacements are done. The whole time frame for me
will be about 1 yr. total(everything). The upside is people tell me I have
great looking teeth and smile more. Well I don't want to have the best
looking teeth in the cemetery, ha ha Take Care All Fred |

I'm still trying to get more info on brass players with dentures. I want as
much info as I can get before I get my finish uppers done. It is with the
upmost importance that the final fit be a good fit and any reccomendations
forwarded to the Dr. and Technicians. I do have confidence, but there
knowledge of muscle tissue concerning brass players is little to none.
I maybe somewhat over reacting, but I hope someone out there can
shed some light on this matter. Thank You All Fred |

Additional Feedback I received.
When it is time to make this new denture a couple of design features may
help you as a brass player such as a thinner palate made of metal(colbalt
chrome) and a properly extended periphery of the upper denture going
right up into the sulcus space all the way round.
You could also have a special denture made just for playing built up more
in the region of the back teeth which allows you to bite and clamp the
upper denture and lower teeth together still leaving front teeth open for
the passage of air. This is a way of making sure that the upper denture cannot be unseated whilst playing. This will avoid having to use fixative
which is just horrible. Trumpet Playing Dentist |

Well finally the time has come. This Wednesday the 23rd I'm getting my
finished upper denture. It has taken me awhile to contemplate the whole
experience and explain the best I can, so others will benefit from it.
The last couple of months I've used a lot of Polygrip and I will be happy to
get rid of it all. I've had a few bad experiences playing with the Temp
denture.Once my denture came loose and prevented me from playing.
Another time I had so much poly my lips wouldn't vibrate and only got
bits of notes. NEVER AGAIN... I'm told my new denture will fit like a glove
and will no longer need poly. I'm looking forward to getting my two
front teeth for Christmas, Merry Christmas to alland a Good Night. Will
keep you all informed. Fred |

Great news, Fred.
Yes, please keep the progress reports coming. I'm following your posts just in case I myself may someday need to travel this path. This kind of information and personal experience is very valuable. |

Well, My news isn't good. When I got there I was very excited and nerves
at the same time. When they put them in I first noticed they where way
to big and mentioned it. They said my gums need to get used to the new
denture, since the old where worked in. Well I never had my dentures
touch my gums without polygrip, so that doesn't work.
The physical difference really shows how big they are. I look like a horses
mouth when I have them in. I have a appointment on Monday to see what
happened. I have a lot of dissappointments since I started and I'm
beginning to think I went to the wrong Dental Lab than going to a regular
Dentist. Doing homework is credical and messed up on that. I was in a
hurry. But for $2200.00 for each denture you would think I'd have no
worries. Not So. I'llkeep in touch. Thanks for support. Fred |

I've left the dentist office 3X not being happy. If I had gone to a regular
dentist things might have been different. Dental Clinics are much
different, many Doctors and doing resisdency and moving on.
Monday I'm going to get to the bottom of this. Its been 6 months now
and I still can"t eat everything I want. Forget about playing my Trumpet.
I miss playing and moving on. This has stopped me in my tracks. I
don't want to disappoint anyone here, I'm just telling my story as its
unfolding. Talk to you all soon. Fred |

After a long debate, its been decided to redo the impressions for a better
fit. No adjustments could be made on finish denture. This is a indication
that my problems started right from the beginning of my first impression.
Things just got worse along the way.
Having different tech's made communication difficult from patient and
Doctor.
The clinic takes no responsibility for anything. Doing it right the first time
makes no sense. Because I believe that they can do it right I gave them
another chance . Tuesday I go for another appointment.
I should have my new uppers this week. I don't knock clinics, but would
think twice about it. I hope it was all worth it. I'll keep you all informed.
