Making some progress. Wednesday at my last appointment I was told that
the lab tech made a mistake on my finished denture and we had to redo
the impressions over. He made the teeth to big. At that fitting I told them
they were big, but they sent be home and said to try them for awhile.
I didn't wear them for a couple days and returned them and at that point
found out the mistake was made. Tuesday I will go for the final fit, and then
get my new denture, so I can play again, and EAT. Happy New Year and
wish the best to our players out there. Fred

Tomorrow is my next appointment for my upper denture. Because of the
problems I've had with them they have requested that I bring my wife with
me, to assure it is what I like. The first dental tech that took my first
impression no longer works there. My dentist has left and is opening up
her own office in Texas. I will be meeting my new dentist and we will
proceed for the final fitting. When I walk in the office I see and feel the
friction I have created, only because I speak up. When I ask questions
they talk forever, when I question concerns I have its like they are turned
off and want to move on. Now, the only advice I can give is to be not in
a hurry, like I was. Do your homework and get good referrals, which I
didn't. I had confidence in people I didn't know anything about. I am
determined to see that they make it right. Fred

Today another disappointment. Need to do another bite impression. I saw a
big difference between my temp and my new template. Things just did
not look right. My wife didn't go because I ask her not to. She had a good
dentist and did her dentures perfect the first time. She doesn't like what's
happening to me. Tomorrow I go in again. Wish me luck. Fred

I met my new Dentist today, and we reviewed my concerns. Being a
former clarinet play when he was young showed some compassion for
my concerns. What a relief that was. My finish denture will be ready
Friday, for a fit and adjustment if needed. In order to achieve what I
want I have to try them and we will see how the fit will work. My concern
with the new denture is will I be able to whistle. If I can whistle with the
new denture, it won't take me long to get my lip in shape. If I can't it
will take extensive retraining to reshape my lips to the new fit. I did pick
up a few bad habits during my playing years so maybe this experience
could help after all. Well I just hope Friday I'm not disappointed and I can
bring some good news. Toote Toote Fred

I hope you can get this resolved soon. As a person that has had dental woes for years I can really relate.

Today is a good day. I finally got my new upper denture. I like everything
about it. They came out great. I played my horn with very little trouble,
and my lip hasn't lost its muscle and tone is good.
I need to wear them a short time to see if adjustments are necessary,
because the denture is not as tight as I would like it. If any soreness
comes they can fix it. A very little powder adhesive stops any movement
of denture while playing. But my next visit should eliminate the use of any
adhesive. I hope some of this will help others with dentures. Everybody's
mouth is different, that's why Dentists have to treat everyone with their
specific set of problems. I'll keep you all posted. Fred

I set-up and appointment today for a adjustment, because a sore
developed over the week-end on my gum. I still need them to fix denture
so they are more fitted. Teeth come loose after some eating. Playing so
far no problem. I got the teeth I wanted, the Natural Look. Two front
teeth slightly longer, and a couple of Eye Teeth on sides. Some staggered.
Most dentures I've seen on people are to perfect looking, like they were
Machine Made to be exactly alike. My next major issue will be my lower
teeth. To play I will need implants to hold them in. That's a expense that
I'll have to wait. Thank You All for your support. Fred

Keep working on it, Fred, and get everything worked out.

Hopefully, a good, secure fit will take care of everything.

Thanks. My last visit yesterday showed I have a canker sore on gum.
Other than that I think its a go till next year, for my lower.
I can't believe all the views this topic got. There are many concerns
out there that musicians need to know before they jump like I did.
My biggest concern has now passed. I can play again, and Honor our
Veterans for there service and Honors they truly earned and deserve.
If you meet a Vet, Thank him, and if you can help a Veterans Service
Organization with playing Live Taps, instead of the Bugle that plays
with a push of a button, they would be very grateful.

Fred, I think that as a lot of people get older, they may face similar issues. Your post is of interest to many people who may encounter such a situation.

Regular dental care is obviously very important, but there are some other things which can happen to people as well, even to those who have had good dental care. Heredity, accidents, various health issues, and aging can all have different effects on different people.

So it is good and encouraging to hear that it is possible to overcome this obstacle if it would become necessary for whatever the reason.

My new upper denture fits good. But the problem I'm having is the
denture will not stay up without adhesive . The recommendation I get
is to have a soft reline, and if it works out ok, get a hard reline. Relines
are done for loose denture over years of use. My denture is brand new,
I believe they should fit with falling out. The first soft reline is free, the
hard reline is about $300.00. My question is should I pay for something
that should have been done right the first time, or get a second opinion?
My total cost for just uppers are total $2500.00. And that's not with posts.
My playing time is limited with adhesive. My eating is limited to mostly
soft foods. This just sucks all around. Fred

Hi Fred,
I know that there are a couple people here that have said that they don't need adhesive to hold their full plate in place but that has not been my experience.

I have a full upper plate and a lower plate anchored by two canine teeth. I first got dentures about 12 years ago and I am now on my second set. I believe I had my first set relined after about 4 years and got the new set about 3 years ago. My experience for the entire time I have had dentures is that I can eat or do most everything else without adhesive but I cannot play the trumpet without adhesive on the upper plate. If there is no adhesive holding the upper plate it will vibrate as I play. That vibration on the roof of my mouth is intolerable. I avoid that by applying adhesive paste to the full upper before I play. I can put adhesive on the lower partial or not - the anchor teeth hold that in place.

good luck,
Kimberly

Thank You for your comment, I really appreciate it. With a new upper
plate should I have to use adhesive if it was done right the first time.
I can't even eat with them without them coming loose. Playing I do need
adhesive, but I get no vibration. The adhesive melts over time. It will
last about 4-5 hours before I need to do it again. Today I have an
appointment and will see what happens. There is another option but
expensive. Put posts in upper jaw to hold them in. At 73 how long do I
have left. Is it cost effective. I'm in good health and love playing. Life
is short, maybe I'll just go for it? Fred

I would think that would be that would be on a case by case basis. Since dentures are molded to fit your particular gum structure, I could easily see that some features may contribute to a more stable fit - others not so much. I would assume the more pronounced the topology the more stable the denture.

For instance I have a deep pocket in my right lower gum line (read bone loss) I could imagine that that pocket would be one element that contributes to the stability of that denture.

I'd write more but I've got to run to class now,
Kimberly

My big picture is I went to a clinic, instead of a regular dentist office.
There were to many miss-steps in the whole procedure to explain here.
I spent little time with dentist, and felt I was a part in training of up
and coming dentists and assistants.
I've always contended the dentures where to big from the beginning, but
no one paid any attention. I have my old partial plate, my first temp
denture, and my finish denture. I my have to get a second opinion
later. Now I'm giving them a chance to fix the problem again...
Thank You All Fred

I made a decision to leave the dental clinic. I've been disappointed many
times and justly so. I spoke with my new provider and between us he told
me they have a questionable reputation. My new provider is a dental lab
trainer. He shows and does classes for doctors and techs. He works for
hospitals and is retired and works at home. I will see him tonight to do
my reline, which he says will stay up without adhesive. I'm comfortable
with him. Fred

PostPosted: Tue Feb 02, 2016 7:43 am    Post subject: Partials Reply with quote

I am currently going thru dental procedures for upper partials both sides. I have 5 upper middle teeth still, but need to schedule for fitting of the partials.

Trumpet seems to be ok. Though I am very conscious of the amount of pressure I place on the embrouchure. It's not necessary for slamming the trumpet to the lips to reach the high. So this is one thing I'm working on. I was doing scales and I've been able to reach one note higher than usual with the thinking of less pressing the trumpet to the embrouchure.

YouTube has a few video lessons on this subject. I'll continue to work on this as well as other things. Last night I typed up a practice worksheet agenda. What to do during practice. 5 min warm up, buzzing, long tones, slurs, single, double, triple tongue practice... Etc

Just trying to get a routine down.
