Has anyone ever played a Getzen Eb Soprano Cornet? I've seen VERY few of them but I love Getzen Cornets. How would you compare it to the Yamaha Sopranos ( YCR261 & the Maestro) OR the Schlike? What kind of sound do you get out of it? What's the intonation like?
What mouthpiece do you usually play Soprano with ?

I played a Getzen Eterna Sop for a couple and didn't think much of it.. maybe because it was old and mis-treated for years and it was on it's last legs...
Check out the Courtois 107 or the Schilke. The Smith-Watkins is also worth checking out.
I use a Schilke 15a4 mouthpiece.

I played the Schilke Eb cornet at the factory last weekend and it was sweet. I have not played any of the other Eb horns to compare, but the Schilke was very good. |

the newer getzen is a nce horn, better than the yamaha i think. the intonation is generally very good apart from D in the stave which is very sharp, but that is no problem to fix with the first trigger. its got one enormous bell on it, almost Bb size! very nice sound out of that thing.
the older ones are not so good, keep clear of thoes.
the yamaha feels quite stuffy up the top, not to good for thoes band parts that go up to a D!
have fun, sam |

im afraid i cant show you a pic of it, they dont show it on their website. i think we may need to pin down the model your talking about. the older model has a long leadpipe and a long bell with relativly smal turns in the tubing, the newer model is a bit like the schilke, a copy i think but a good one at a reasonable price. i dont know why its not on their site, you may have to email them for more information.

I believe Getzen discontinued the "newer" soprano cornet, model # 892ES-T. |

I have a long model getzen - awesome beast. The bell is the same size as a normal Bb cornet. Makes mutes very easy to find (not many people make a good Eb mute, yet).
The tuning is fairly poor, but the combination of a trigger on 1st valve and a slide on 3rd help this a great deal. The sound is fantastic. It will happily produce a full tone with enough power to stay on top of a full brass band.
The Schilke I have found to be a lot brighter to play and I have never been happy with the tuning, It is either in tune for the lower register or the upper, I have always had problems with the middle. It could just be me.
If you are thinking of purchasing a soprano cornet, save up for a bit and obtain a Blackburn. To hear me raving about this instrument check out the relevant thread - it is quite simply the best soprano I have ever played (and I have played my way through the majority). Tuning was outstanding and the tone was huge! Quite fantastic. If I was playing soprano in a band at the moment I would already have my order in with Blackburn. As it is, I am not currently playing soprano much, so my Getzen will suffice. |

It is interesting to hear trumpetmike on Schilke tuning. When I played sop the band Schilke was terrible on c, d, and 4th space e. Ibought a Smith Watkins, only bad note was a top line g. The Smith Watkins is a far better instrument but Peter Roberts etc do ok on a Schilke!!

Peter Roberts, Michelle Ibbotson and the like sound fantastic on Schilke - but they are the sort of people who could play on anything and make it sound fantastic. I was at university with Michelle, awesome player.
I would love to hear her play on the Blackburn soprano - an instrument worthy of her! |

That must be the newer model.
I played the old model for 2 years and it was awful.
It was so bad in fact that I ended up transposing onto a Bb cornet a lot of the time just to guarantee to be in tune.
I think the yamaha is the benchmark for the minimum acceptable playability.
The besson sovereign is bizzarely out of tune in various parts of the range, but nothing that couldnt be fixed with a hacksaw and blowtorch.

I got it the other day .. It's in amazing condition.. Had an amato water key stuck but I fixed that .. THey didn;lt have any idea what they had.. It has a Bb cotner book & music in the case.. Af ew small scratches but other than that Perfect.. Looks better than any of my other horns..
One Problem.. It has a wierd Mouthpiece reciever.. I can get my Flugel Mouthpieces to fit but my Wicks & my Sparx Cornet would not fit.. I'll try my new Stork Cornet Mouthpieces today, but it seem to have a larger than normal Reciever.. I've emailed Getzen for Info on it.
For the Getzen Lovers ( & Maybe some Skeptics) here is an article:

Figured out that the Problem was it has a Getzen Bb trumpet shank picc pipe in it so I’m waiting on a Getzen Cornet Pipe..
Last night I let some of the guys use it at Cornet band rehearsal..WOW.. It really is very versatile.. It can blend with the Bb's or can sing above everyone.. I also used my Blackburn Bb P2 picc pipe in it last night.. ..HHHMM I think I may have to eventually get Cliff or Tina to take one of the Getzen p2 picc pipes & put a cornet receiver on it..
It really did play very nice with that pipe on it..
Maybe Riffdawg or asemaster will chime in & give their thoughts, they both played it!

Kevin,
NICE horn. I was using my #3 backbore 1C most of the night. Blends well with good intonation & really sings out when you want to. Seemed just a little bright to me but that may be the trumpet mouthpiece. I'll look for my B cup with the 5 backbore to try next week. _________________ Bill

I.....LIKE IT! Plays more like a Bb than a piccolo. Very open. I agree with Bill, a little on the bright side, but a MP change might correct that! _________________ Joel Thomas |
