I'm curious if anyone else here has read the Mendez biography? I forget the title and publisher's information, but when I was an undergrad. trumpet major (and NOT a reader), I checked the book out of the FSU library. It was mildewed and nobody ever got to check it out again (at least that I know of), but I read the entire thing in one sitting on a Friday night.

Just wondering if anyone else here thought it was as captivating as I did some 13 years ago. I still remember the stories about his wife taking the trumpet away and giving him a sandwich so he wouldn't forget to eat. Talk about focus!

I have read the book and looked up things in it many times.

Magnificent Méndez - A Biography by Jane W. Hickman and Delon Lyren
It was published in 1994.

A new enhanced version from 2005 (lot of photos) is available from Hickman Music Edtion.

I purchased all of the remaining inventory, and it is only available through my Hickman Music Editions website. Very good book for not much money.

Wow that's great to know! I must say, if I had been able to continue in the trumpet field, I would certainly have been one of those nerds who would do trumpet research. As it is I'll be doing research in ethics and philosophy instead.

I must say, Mr. Hickman, I was mightily impressed hearing your sophomore performance majors at ITG a few years ago.

Thanks for the info. on the book!

I enjoyed that book very much, it is a real insight into the man ...Rafael Mendez.
Mr. Mendez had a tremendous work ethic.
I also have a CD that ITG put out several years ago, which was a CD that contained tributes to Mr Mendez from many world class trumpet players.
Truly inspirational.

There is a book with several of his solos and it has a wonderful 8 page biography.
