I'm considering moving to the Colorado Springs area and wondering who teaches nearby or within reasonable driving distance.
I play both classical and jazz, and do some jazz improv too.
I know Brad Goode is in Boulder and Al Hood is in the Denver area.
I don't know much about the trumpeters in the Colorado Symphony or Colorado Springs Philharmonic.
Previously, I've studied with various teachers for different styles, approaches, fundamentals, range, jazz improv, etc.
Some of the groups I've performed with in the Chicago area are the Wheaton Symphony, West Suburban Symphony, DuPage Symphony, Celebration Brass, Glen Ellyn Jazz Ensemble, Funk du Jour, and North Riverside Players. |

I live in Northern Colorado. I don't know any trumpeter that far south, but Colorado has a high caliber of musicianship. I would give All Hood a call and he can make a recommendation. |

There's me. But I'm not teaching much and am not a music major.
David Zuercher is incredible and would be a great teacher for anyone. He's at the top of my list. He is principal of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic (not to be confused with the Pikes Peak Philharmonic, the orchestra I play with). Tom Wilson is a prize-winning player but I am not sure he is teaching much (he is conducting more these days). I am not sure if the other two teach though they are really good players (Chris Lawson is a great lead player but I am not sure he teaches).
Mark Hammelev, formerly with the Brass Bow and Wayne Tanabe, also teaches so we have a first-class tech, teacher, and player. He lives on the north side of Colorado Springs.
From there are a number of great players who teach but I have not kept current. Several play with the military bands in the area, and we have some top-notch school districts as well. One of local high schools has a pro trumpet player who is their band director. And so forth. Some of them have retired (which is where I'll be in about 100 years at the age of 157 the way things are going!) Rest assured you will not lack for teachers in the Springs area. _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

You might check out John Adler at the University of Northern Colorado. He's a very fine and versatile player

He is, but UNC is a long way from Colorado Springs... (My older son went there, not as a trumpet major however.) _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

Thanks for the excellent information everyone!
Don, I looked at David Zuercher's website and his background is impressive. It's looking as though there will be plenty of opportunity to continue learning and performing in the Colorado Springs area. Thanks!

David Zuercher is wonderful. Helped me with several issues. I take a lesson with him each summer (11 years now).
He is a wonderful musician, player and person.
Arnold Jacobs school of teaching/playing.
You cannot go wrong with him.

He also met with Carmine Caruso at one point but is fundamentally a Jacob's advocate. I believe his first (college) teacher was Leon Rapier, and he spent a little time with Vacchiano and Krauss as well. Heckuva' player and amazingly fun guy to be with and learn from, perhaps the most positive and upbeat person I know. _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

I went to see David Zuercher a couple of weeks ago and found David to be a wonderful teacher with a very positive attitude. He focused on my issues and was very helpful.
I highly recommend David as an encouraging teacher who focuses on the needs of the student. |

Does anyone have recommendations for classical teachers in the Boulder/Denver area? I'm looking for instruction aimed approximately at college level. Thanks! |

I agree with Don above. Mark Hamalev is really a great resource for the Colorado Springs area.
For symphony players Justin Bartels, principle trumpet in the Colorado Symphony is very knowledgeable, I'm sure, a great classical teacher. He's in the Denver metro area. _________________ Bill |

Oh, and Terry Sawchuk at University of Colorado, Boulder would be an excellent college level classical player. _________________ Bill |

Yes, I took lessons from Terry Sawchuk until his retirement from CU Boulder and he was excellent. Developed my playing in a great way! |
