That was played on Flugel? Hum. Learn something every decade. I used to play that in high school and college in '76--'82 ish.

I picked up my horn just now and it seems like the beginning notes are---

Eb-E-G_____ A! Eb D... C A, A....... A E D C B A.......

ABC DEFG Ab..... G Ab G, Ab G, Ab G, Ab G, Ab G F....

Ab,A,Bb,B,Ab,F,D, E.......E,FEFEFE C A G..... end

..... is that note just held over longer.

b = flat i.e. Eb e flat. which is probably D sharp.

Anyway, thanks for the memories. I don't have any music but I'd contact Eric Bolvin over in the Claude Gordon group.

Flugel huh? I'll have to buy some TOP CD's.

(just played all that stuff every weekend by ear so I could have the wrong key)

mark

edit-- had to fix the VERY first and last note. That's how I would play it. How about you?

Which album is that on? I might have a few minutes later this week if you can wait that long for a PDF.

Jeff,

I was going to blindly reply that it is on "Live and In Living Color" without even checking, and I would have been wrong!! I did find "So Very Hard To Go" on two TOP CDs: the self-titled "Tower of Power" released in 1973, and on the more recent 1998 release "Soul Vaccination Tower of Power Live". It may be on other CDs, but these were easily referenced. Hope this helps!

I love the intro TOP has on that Soul Vaccination album, only James Brown has a better one.

Very old thread, but I decided to write this out recently.

If anyone is interested, PM me contact info and I can send you a PDF of the flugel solo. If you use dropbox, grab a copy directly from here:

Definitely a flugel solo. The definitive version is the one from the Tower of Power album (1973), but Greg used to change it up every time he played it. The new guys just riff on the recorded version.
