Ultra rare 1930's tri-color 'The Olds' cornet

Well, not quite a tricolor. I taped the bell at the flare-line, and hit the flare with Flitz metal polish. Love it! I can actually read the engraving. I can feel the tape line just a bit with my finger. Many years of old laquer and ____. And it's had a chem clean! I'll post more links, but I think y'all should be able to see all the different pics at photo bucket. Got this little bundle of joy maybe a month or so ago, and am really liking it. Has several cool features. Check out the bell and lead pipe attachments:

Makes for a pretty narrow top. I wonder if it contributes to its nice response?

There is also the nifty wrap of the lead pipe that manages to avoid any tight turns that I see on so many cornets:

And you can see the left side of the horn is pretty small and requires some time to find a good grip.

I use it as a water dump after I've been playing a bit. Works well!

It is a LM bore and measures .455 Anyone have a measurement on the M bore or L bore from this period?

Plays nice with a Curry BBC. Nice cornet sound! Sounds its best from pp-mf, though I suspect Real Players will get better results.

Anyway, it's a fun little horn. A good challenge to master the first slide tuning adjustments. The bell is only 4 9/16" !

Very cool. Is it really from the 1930's? That would make it around 80 something years old. That's a little piece of history you have there.

I love seeing horns with unconventional tubing layout. Modern instruments are all the same and I swear it makes a difference to the blow/tone...

Those "The Olds" cornets are still very much in demand. I know four very well-known pros who play them. The successor model "The Olds Standard" looks similar, but the wrap has been opened up so there's more room for the player's hands. Otherwise, they seem to play about the same to me.

That's a nice cornet! Basically the same design as my 1890 Besson, less the crook in the bell.
