Why would you say that? There's nothing cheek specific to BE and regarding his tongue, you can't see inside his mouth. Not being a smart @ss, just want to know what is it that I don't know and you do.

Well, to be fair to Lloyd, he didn't say anything about a cheek puff being specific to BE. His comment can be interpreted as more in line with the BE idea that a cheek puff is not a sin, and that many great players use them.

At least, that's the way I took it.

As for the TOL comment, I agree with you, that one is tougher to defend. Perhaps it just sounds that way to Lloyd?

Jeff, thanks for your reply…

With regards to the TOL comment….at about :40 in the video the lead trumpet player sticks out his tongue before he sets his embouchure.

Years ago Jerry Callet went to see Bill Chase live and up close in an effort to learn his high note secrets. Jerry observed Bill doing the same thing with his tongue before setting his embouchure.

Jerry later introduced the “tonguing thru the teeth” part of his method
TOL can only be accomplished if one tongues thru the teeth in an effort to touch the top lip with the tongue.

I just made an assumption based on what I saw and past information about Bill Chase via Jerry Callet.

Bottom line is…The lead trumpet player in the video has some chops, range and a great sound….

Nick Cooper, monster player, nice guy!
I had the great pleasure and fortune of playing in a section with him for a short time (USAF - yes, he used to be in the Air Force)

It seems to be a bit more pronounced in this video but he always played with a bit of an air pocket under his lower lip - not really puffing his cheeks. His neck does expands quite noticably also. I just went to his FB page and watched a couple of his personal videos - not puffing his cheeks.

The tongue thing, I think is more of a habit that wets the chops instead of "setting" position But I don't want to put words in his mouth. Just my observations from working with him.

A Monster Player - has worked a lot on his craft!

cheers.

I don't think using your tongue to set your embouchure is related to tonguing on the lips. BY the way, Leon Merian who was a top player in his day tongued through his lips

I don't want to offend you here, but it appears that you have a completely different definition of "puffing cheeks" than I have. From a BE perspective, he absolutely plays with puffed cheeks. It isn't puffed to the magnitude of Dizzy, but it is totally opposite from the standard tight corners and flat chin.

Jerry, I think it is fair to say that one does not necessarily lead to the other, but in practical terms, the two actions are very much related.

No worries - healthy discussion.. but here is another video. Nick playing lead.

https://www.facebook.com/usnavyband/videos/10153741443893396/

I do see him puffing but only in the middle of the tune during the soli section.. not sure myself why he would do that. Notice the intro and last note - no pufffing at all..

Why not just do what works, whatever that means?
