I am getting ready to retire and am just now starting to listen to jazz. Of the artists currently performing live, who are the top trumpet players I need to make the effort to see in concert and why? So far I have three guys on the list (alphabetical order):
Chris Botti, because I love his sound and music
Roy Hargrove, because I love his music
Wynton, just because he is such an institution

Who am I missing?

I'd add Arturo Sandoval, Randy Brecker, Tom Harrell, and Claudio Roditi to the list.

The whole Big Phat Band section is something to see, especially if Wayne is playing (I know, it's not exactly an "individual").

Jack Sheldon

Bob Summers (a regular member of the Phat band section)

Ron Stout

Kenny Rampton

Guido Basso

Why?

Beautiful sounds.

Indivudual creativity.

All of them know jazz language and history and they can tell a story.

And speaking of knowing the language, etc., if you get the opportunity to see Chris Potter (tenor), by all means DO IT.

Greg Gisbert
Terell Stafford

Greg I've never heard in person, but what a complete badass!! I think I've heard most of anything he is on. Ridiculous!!

Terell I've heard a good few times and took a lesson with him. He is incredible. His sound is big as houses. Truly wonderful musician and a very generous and genuine person. Man people need to check him out!!

So many...

I suggest you to listen to www.jazzradio.com for a while. You can chose the instrument you like to listen, trumpet for instance.

As your jazz trumpet culture is on the thin side ( no offense here ), it will let you listen to many jazz trumpet players and styles. Then after a moment, you'll see which jazz style you prefer: be-bop, hard-bop, cool, contemporary, latin etc. It will enlarge your jazz trumpet culture a lot.

Just a suggestion.

I would add:

Ambrose Akinmusire
Avishai Cohen
Enrico Rava
Kenny Wheeler
Tomasz Stanko

First, thanks for the tutorial. This is going to be a real education for me. I haven't heard of many of those folks. Secondly, man have I got a lot of concerts to attend. I'll start tracking all of these suggestions. I think that I will put Wayne Bergeron and Till Bronner at the top of my list.

Another suggestion: buy some jazz magazines. It will open your mind to many outstandibg musicians you don't hear often.

I have read a lot if this kind of threads and I am always wondering why nobody mentions the great Russian trumpeter Alex Sipiagen, who lives in NY for maybe 24 years or so.
Listen to one of his records, take Destinations Unknown.
He has an amazing sound and creativity.

Thanks for the suggestion, I didn't know him at all. I love meeting new trumpeters

Jazz magazines? Hmmm. I didn't know there were any. Great idea. www.jazzradio.com is another good idea I didn't know about. I started to listen to Real Jazz on SiriusXM radio and I look for things on YouTube. Those have been my main sources from which to learn. There are some real gems on YouTube - that's where I found Roy Hargrove. TH has been a big help. Until I found this website I had never heard of Bix, Clifford Brown, Chet Baker and so many more. For that matter, I had never heard of Getzen, Benge, Austin Custom Brass, Flip Oakes, Harrelson, Curry Mouthpieces, Martin Committee trumpets, Claude Gordon, the bebop scale and on and on. So, now I have a "jazz" trumpet, some Curry mouthpieces, some Claude Gordon books and I am on my way. I may be getting a late start, but it's nice to have something new to discover even at my age.

My additions:

Thomas Gansch

Warren Vache (mostly cornet, but I think he played trumpet on his Concord recordings with Scott Hamilton).

Bria Skonberg -- very tasteful solos.

And a second for Ambrose Akinmusire.
