If you are in NYC you must go hear Jon-Erik Kellso. Sundays at the Ear Inn, other places around town with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks. Great "old school" playing in the Ruby Braff vein. _________________ Greg

I started to listen to Real Jazz on SiriusXM radio and I look for things on YouTube. Those have been my main sources from which to learn. There are some real gems on YouTube - that's where I found Roy Hargrove. TH has been a big help. Until I found this website I had never heard of Bix, Clifford Brown, Chet Baker and so many more. For that matter, I had never heard of Getzen, Benge, Austin Custom Brass, Flip Oakes, Harrelson, Curry Mouthpieces, Martin Committee trumpets, Claude Gordon, the bebop scale and on and on. So, now I have a "jazz" trumpet, some Curry mouthpieces, some Claude Gordon books and I am on my way. I may be getting a late start, but it's nice to have something new to discover even at my age. |
You can get Downbeat and JazzTimes both for a few more than $10. I discovered many great and not well known trumpet players and other musicians and groups through those magazines. _________________ The least we can do is wave to each other

There are some great suggestions in here - more than a few that made me think, "huh, I should listen to this cat more!"
I didn't see his name mentioned, so I'd like to add Avishai Cohen, who is doing some great things these days.
Also Dave Douglas, who has been one of my favorites for ages. What a great sound and interesting musical concepts. Be prepared for surprises! _________________ Yamaha 8310Z trumpet

Yeah, in addition to the usual suspects, Avishai is one of the new (to many) great ones. Certainly not a household name. His whole family literally consists of a bunch of virtuoso musicians. Oh, and Avishai plays a really cool horn made by Josh Landress in NYC. |

I love Avishai Cohen. He's one of the guy who's responsible of my interest of playing trumpet! For better or for worse...( my wife would say !! )
I don't know you, but for a jazz trumpet newbie as I guess you are, Avishai Cohen music can be a bit hard to digest at first. What I recommend you for beginning is to listen to Omer Avital quintet; Cohen is on the trumpet and the music is much more accessible.
Oh, and one hint when you search for Avishai Cohen on the net: type Avishai Cohen trumpet, cause if not you'll fall on Avishai Cohen the bassist... _________________ The least we can do is wave to each other

That's somewhat true. He is kinda out there sometimes. But in a good way.
Here's a clip featuring a whole covey of Cohen's doing their thing on a Duke Ellington tune. It's pretty accessible.

I realize we all made an unforgivable heresy: nobody mentioned the great, the inescapable and irreplaceable Freddie Hubbard.
The vast majority of today's trumpet players owe A LOT to Freddie !! _________________ The least we can do is wave to each other

Miles has been kind of influencial too, though no one mentioned him. Wonder who else we're overlooking. |

Sadly, Miles and Freddie both fail one of OP's criteria: "Of the artists currently performing live" |

Well, that's true of Keeny Wheeler and Pops too. But once a topic gets taken over by a bunch of trumpet players listing favorite players this kind of thing is bound to happen. |

Jojocat, well, I was really looking for trumpet players whom I could go hear in person. I missed seeing Lous, Miles, Chet and Maynard. I don't want to miss the next generation.
I haven't even heard the names of most of the folks who were recommended so this post has been a great education for me. I'm checking the artists out on YouTube and so forth.
Andrew deValpine mentioned Bria Skonberg. I had never heard of her, but her music on Youtube makes me smile. It's going to take me a while to explore all of the recommendations. I really appreciate everyone's contributions. I'm getting a crash course. Nice. _________________ Bach Stradivarius 37 (1971)

Cuong Vu. He's kinda out there though, so like Avashi Cohen not always easy to listen to, but doing some really interesting things.
this clip is probably the most accessible thing you will find from him and it is still pretty progressive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lJ8mWe9sGY |

Cuong Vu - another name I was not familiar with. At first take, he seems easier to listen to than Alban Berg, Karlheinz Stockhausen, or Krzysztof Penderecki (and I like some of their stuff). Music doesn't necessarily have to be pretty, just interesting enough to hold your attention for one entire performance. _________________ Bach Stradivarius 37 (1971)
