Larry - the Thomas Marriott tip was a good one. Just listened to "Up From Under." NICE. Thanks. It's hard to quit listening to start practicing.

I've been listening to Thmas for a long time. Especially love his sound, among other qualities.

Just an update.

I never found the time to get to live concerts while I was working. I decided to make up for lost time. I'm making progress. Since my original post, I've had a chance to hear live performances by the following artists, not all of them are jazz, but if there is a trumpet player playing, I'm there:
Chris Botti
Roy Hargrove
Byron Stripling
Shaye Cohen (Tuba Skinny)
Paul Brandenburg (Hot Sardines)
Dennis DiSano, Dave Hill, Fabio Mann, Tom Strayer, John Wojcik, (ABBA- Augusta Big Band Aggregate)
Chris Fensom, Brian Winegardner, John Bryant, Paul Poovey, and Jonathan Swygert (Symphony of Augusta, Augusta, GA)
Tim Hudson and Ashley Hall (Carolina Brass Quintet)

Americans always ask, “who is the best?” Honestly, I don't think that question particularly relevant. I enjoyed each one of these concerts. I was just as thrilled to hear any one of these artists as another. One of the most interesting things is the difference in sound between, say, Chris Botti, Byron Stripling and Roy Hargrove. Big differences, but all simply fantastic.

The lesson learned is, if there is a trumpet player in driving distance, go listen.

Any further recommendations for other artists would be greatly appreciated. On my scope already are Arturo Sandoval, Wynton Marsalis, Flip Oakes, and Trent Austin.

Life is simply better with live trumpet performances.

Warm regards,
Grits

Richard,

Thanks.

As a matter of fact, I purchased an old King Master Cornet to take with me to New Orleans. Can't wait. Okay, yes I can - until after the hot summer weather!

Warm regards,
Grits

Good plan. We'll be there in October. Good times ahead.

When you're in New Orleans, try to catch Duke Heitger.

I drove from San Francisco to Hollywood the day of the performance just to see Roy Hargrove and his quintet a couple of months ago. What a performance! stayed both sets. Don't pass up the chance to see Roy!

I saw Avishai Cohen (not the bassist) last year in Oakland. Another phenomenal trumpet player. Check him out on youtube. In particular:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUTrB0Wl3b4

and

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsTiwvyxrxI

Also I recommend seeing Wallace Roney live. He is another incredible performer and sounds even better in person.

This Sunday I am going to see Mr. Arturo Sandoval at the SFJAZZ institute.
Can't wait!

I appreciate all of the recommendations. I will try to see each one, though that might prove to be a bit of a challenge. I do have two chances to catch Arturo and it goes without saying that I am very excited about that.

I've listened to videos of Avishai Cohen. I really enjoyed them. I'd love to hear more.

I agree; the Roy Hargrove Quintet was fantastic. I love what he does.

We need an "all trumpet, all the time" channel on cable TV. If there were one, it would be the only channel worth watching.

Warm regards,
Grits

One name that I would recommend highly is Warren Vache, He's an amazing player from the NYC area. I've never had the chance to hear him live. It's on my bucket list.
A little far away but worth hearing is DeShannon Higa. He's in the Hawaiian Islands and is a wonderful jazz player. I've heard him twice and he blew me away each time.

There is a woman jazz trumpeter, whom, unfortunately, I can only identify by the fact that she often wears a bikini top and a long skirt, and plays inexpensive Chinese pocket trumpets. Someone here will know who she is. Anyway, I thought she sounded good.

I think I saw Avishai, playing with Liquid Soul, a Chicago based horn driven band.
The Indianapolis Jazz Festival, cica 1995. Tall guy?

If you are in NYC you must go hear Jon-Erik Kellso. Sundays at the Ear Inn, other places around town with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks. Great "old school" playing in the Ruby Braff vein.

Man I love Ruby Braff! Wish I had dropped out of school in 7th grade, just stuck with one horn and 1 mpc, and a stack of Ruby Braff records ...

Then I could be the broke jazz musician Chris Botti doesn't want to be, lol. (I went to school with Chris)

I realize we all made an unforgivable heresy: nobody mentioned the great, the inescapable and irreplaceable Freddie Hubbard.

The vast majority of today's trumpet players owe A LOT to Freddie !!

Miles has been kind of influencial too, though no one mentioned him. Wonder who else we're overlooking.

The OP was asking specifically for cats that are alive and actively playing now. Presumably so he might be able to see them live!

Sadly, Miles and Freddie both fail one of OP's criteria: "Of the artists currently performing live"

Well, that's true of Keeny Wheeler and Pops too. But once a topic gets taken over by a bunch of trumpet players listing favorite players this kind of thing is bound to happen.

Well in that case Clarke Terry reigns supreme. I mean, he just, does. Always fun. He belongs on every possible list, including great human being. Can't believe I never took the time to see him live ...

Man, I'd love to hear Carl Saunders. I've got most (all?) of his CDs. He has such a wonderful bell tone in his upper register.

Warm regards,
Grits
